Sometimes you strolled with others....<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='027985' href=\"\/i\/JEF_027985.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_027985_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nid=\"i027985\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 55mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>250 sec, f\/5, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_027985.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_027985.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><br\/><\/div>\n\n<p>... and sometimes you had the place pretty much to yourself:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='028016' href=\"\/i\/JEF_028016.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_028016_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nid=\"i028016\"\nphotostream=\"japan\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 18mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>125 sec, f\/7.1, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_028016.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_028016.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_028016c.gif\" width=\"329\" height=\"309\"\nid=\"i028016c\"\nstyle=\"float:right; margin-left:20px\"\/>\n\n<p>The little plaque on the tree (shown again at right) is an augmented\nversion of the little plaques one finds on <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of plant life in Japanese\npublic parks, identifying the name or species of plant. <span class='nobr'>The title<\/span> says\n&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somei_Yoshino\">Somei Yoshino<\/a>,&#8221; which could also be written <span class='nobr'>\u67d3\u4e95\u5409\u91ce<\/span> and means\n&#8220;Yoshino cherry tree.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Then it says <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosaceae\">Rosaceae<\/a> (which is <span class='nobr'>a word<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> even know in English,\nbut the meaning is clear from the Japanese: &#8220;rose family.&#8221;)<\/p>\n\n<p>Then it describes....<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin:10px 30px; padding-right:20px'>The trees whose cherry blossoms you're enjoying\nnow are for the most the same as this tree. They spread from Edo's &#8220;Somei\nVillage&#8221; (now Tokyo's Toshima Ward) and hence the name.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edo\">Edo<\/a> is the old name for\nthe Tokyo region (for the millennium or so until 1868). The &#8220;Somei&#8221; is written\nas <span class='nobr'>\u67d3\u4e95,<\/span> the first part of the tree's name.\nThese days, that <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;q=ll=35.730001,139.715281&amp;spn=0.034698,0.076561&amp;t=k&amp;z=14&amp;om=1\">Toshima\nWard<\/a> area seems to be <span class='nobr'>a concrete<\/span> jungle, so I'm glad the trees made it here\n(and all over Japan, apparently).<\/p>\n\n<br clear='all'\/>\n\n<p>Here's another sign I noticed:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='027982' href=\"\/i\/JEF_027982.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_027982_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nid=\"i027982\"\nphotostream=\"japan\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 32mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>160 sec, f\/8, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_027982.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_027982.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>It says &#8220;Beware of Mamushi,&#8221; which is not very helpful if you don't know\nwhat &#8220;Mamushi&#8221; is, which <span class='nobr'>I didn't.<\/span> Luckily, <span class='nobr'>I must be<\/span> clairvoyant because <span class='nobr'>I\nsomehow<\/span> magically understood the meaning nevertheless. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n<p>Mamushi is a type of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamushi\">pit\nviper<\/a> whose venomous bite can be fatal, and as such, bewaring of them is probably good advice.<\/p>\n\n<p>I didn't see any snakes, but did see this ferocious beast in <span class='nobr'>a field<\/span> of flowers down the hill from the berm:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='028003' href=\"\/i\/JEF_028003.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_028003_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nid=\"i028003\"\nphotostream=\"spring\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 55mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>1250 sec, f\/2.8, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_028003.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_028003.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:175%'>The Flowers Were Enjoyed by All<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It was <i>extremely<\/i> hazy, but <span class='nobr'>I felt<\/span> an obligation to take <span class='nobr'>a picture<\/span> of the bullet train running by half <span class='nobr'>a kilometer<\/span> away.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='028011' href=\"\/i\/JEF_028011.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_028011_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"462\"\nid=\"i028011\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 55mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>250 sec, f\/7.1, ISO 250 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_028011.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_028011.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:150%'>Obligatory Bullet-Train-and-Cherry-Blossoms Picture<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n<p>By the way, <span class='nobr'>I should<\/span> fess up that <span class='nobr'>I added<\/span> the blue sky to the 2nd photo\nin this post. <span class='nobr'>It was so<\/span> hazy that any picture with sky turned out horrible\n(like the bullet-train one above). Of course, while visiting, one's\nattention tends to gravitate to the cherry blossoms and is encouraged\ntoward pleasantness by the lovely breeze, the nice smells, etc., but none\nof that shows up in the picture. So, lacking the blue sky that would have\nadded so much had it been there, <span class='nobr'>I added<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n<p>I didn't mention it until now so that you would have <span class='nobr'>a chance<\/span> to see the\npicture without knowing that the sky was faked.
