I love the little sprig of blossoms nestled in the bark of the tree.<\/p>\n\n

I thought I'd post some more photos from the really pleasant visit<\/a> I had<\/span>\nto the Yodogawa Kasen Park a month<\/span> ago, at the start of the cherry blossom\nseason.<\/p>\n\n

If you'll recall, it's a mile-long raised berm with a path<\/span> in the\nmiddle, lined with hundreds of flowering (but not fruiting) cherry trees.<\/p>\n\n

The area to either side has pathways as well, and eventually rivers\n(it's at a spot<\/span> where three rivers come together). I wouldn't<\/span> be surprised\nif the lower areas flood during the rainy seasons.<\/p>\n\n

I went on a weekday well before peak blossoms, so it was generally\nuncrowded. Sometimes you strolled with others....<\/p>\n\n\n

... and sometimes you had the place pretty much to yourself:<\/p>\n\n

The little plaque on the tree (shown again at right) is an augmented\nversion of the little plaques one finds on a lot<\/span> of plant life in Japanese\npublic parks, identifying the name or species of plant. The title<\/span> says\n“Somei Yoshino<\/a>,” which could also be written \u67d3\u4e95\u5409\u91ce<\/span> and means\n“Yoshino cherry tree.”<\/p>\n\n

Then it says Rosaceae<\/a> (which is a word<\/span> I don't<\/span> even know in English,\nbut the meaning is clear from the Japanese: “rose family.”)<\/p>\n\n

Then it describes....<\/p>\n\n

The trees whose cherry blossoms you're enjoying\nnow are for the most the same as this tree. They spread from Edo's “Somei\nVillage” (now Tokyo's Toshima Ward) and hence the name.<\/p>\n\n

Edo<\/a> is the old name for\nthe Tokyo region (for the millennium or so until 1868). The “Somei” is written\nas \u67d3\u4e95,<\/span> the first part of the tree's name.\nThese days, that Toshima\nWard<\/a> area seems to be a concrete<\/span> jungle, so I'm glad the trees made it here\n(and all over Japan, apparently).<\/p>\n\n

Here's another sign I noticed:<\/p>\n\n

It says “Beware of Mamushi,” which is not very helpful if you don't know\nwhat “Mamushi” is, which I didn't.<\/span> Luckily, I must be<\/span> clairvoyant because I\nsomehow<\/span> magically understood the meaning nevertheless. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

Mamushi is a type of pit\nviper<\/a> whose venomous bite can be fatal, and as such, bewaring of them is probably good advice.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't see any snakes, but did see this ferocious beast in a field<\/span> of flowers down the hill from the berm:<\/p>\n\n

It was extremely<\/i> hazy, but I felt<\/span> an obligation to take a picture<\/span> of the bullet train running by half a kilometer<\/span> away.<\/p>\n\n

By the way, I should<\/span> fess up that I added<\/span> the blue sky to the 2nd photo\nin this post. It was so<\/span> hazy that any picture with sky turned out horrible\n(like the bullet-train one above). Of course, while visiting, one's\nattention tends to gravitate to the cherry blossoms and is encouraged\ntoward pleasantness by the lovely breeze, the nice smells, etc., but none\nof that shows up in the picture. So, lacking the blue sky that would have\nadded so much had it been there, I added<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't mention it until now so that you would have a chance<\/span> to see the\npicture without knowing that the sky was faked. Once you know it, it looks,\nwell, fake. I hope my<\/span> artistic license is not revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
