(It was much better than when <span class='nobr'>I bought<\/span> him on <span class='nobr'>a multi<\/span>-kilometer, much\nmore difficult hike up the Daimonji Mountain last December, where <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> to\ncarry him most of the way. Sigh, <span class='nobr'>I still<\/span> haven't gotten around to posting\nany photos from that trip, despite having some great ones. Well, <span class='nobr'>I did use<\/span>\none photo from it on my post about my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-12-15\/309\">calendar-building Photoshop\nscript<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n<p><b>[ Update:<\/b> posts about that hike are\n\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-01\/507\">here<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-05\/510\">here<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-03\/509\">here<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-12\/517\">here<\/a>, and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2007-07-13\/518\">here<\/a>.\n<b>]<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Today's outing was pleasant, but <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> just <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> disappointed that <span class='nobr'>I\ncouldn't<\/span> see my building, nor could <span class='nobr'>I see<\/span> anything toward my way from the\ntop (which isn't that high &mdash; it's just <span class='nobr'>a big<\/span> hill &mdash; rising only\n120m higher in elevation than my place). Still, <span class='nobr'>I got some<\/span> okay shots like\nthe one above, from <span class='nobr'>a little<\/span> clearing at the 90m-higher-in-eleveation\nlevel.<\/p>\n\n<p>The building in the center, which is the main building of the Heian\nShrine, is about 1.2 km (3\/4 mile) away. <span class='nobr'>To give a<\/span> sense of scale, the\nsmaller orange building to the left is the shrine's entrance gate, which\ndespite looking fairly small in the picture, is quite big itself. <span class='nobr'>The very lowest<\/span> portion that building has what looks like stilts in the picture\nabove, are huge columns in this picture from a <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-11-11\/277\">previous post<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/blog\/2006-11-11\/277\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF1898_sm.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"469\"\nalt=\"Main Gate of the Heian Shrine\"\nid=\"ism\"\ntitle=\"Main Gete of the Heian Shrine\"\/><\/a><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:175%'>Main Gate of the Heian Shrine<\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>You can also see that gate building in one of my older posts that I'm\nparticularly proud of, about <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2005-12-09\/110\">Photoshop and Japanese\nNew-Year's Cards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>(For additional reference, because I'm <span class='nobr'>a geek<\/span> and <span class='nobr'>I love<\/span> the way distance is compressed in shots like this,\nthe large cream building at the top of the frame, just right of center, is <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;q=35.031674,135.774469&amp;spn=0.001153,0.00338&amp;z=19&amp;om=1\">3km (1.9 miles) away<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Nils suggested the other day, I visited the hiking trails behind the Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel today.
