I went again today to the Kyoto Keage Water-Treatment Plant to see\nthe azaleas (although I didn't<\/span> know they were called “azaleas” until\nlooking up the word yesterday).<\/p>\n\n

The pictures\nyesterday<\/a> didn't give much feel for the overall site, so I thought<\/span> I'd\nshow some today that attempt to. I'm sure I<\/span> won't be successful, for as I\nsaid<\/span> yesterday, it's a huge<\/span> sprawling site with many terraces, pathways,\nalcoves, gardens, nooks, and crannies.<\/p>\n\n

The view is nice enough from the outside, with many flowering azaleas to\nbrighten it. The picture<\/span> above is from across Sanjo Street, looking down the\nhill toward the North. The main entrance<\/span> is way further down the hill than is\nvisible in this shot.<\/p>\n\n

Turning to look up the hill, you can see one huge hillside of azaleas\nthat I thought,<\/span> until yesterday, was the main attraction. I didn't<\/span> realize\nthat the site extends far above what you see here, and that many beautiful\nareas are to be found along the whole breadth of the site, but just aren't\nvisible from the road.<\/p>\n\n

The kids above are walking where, until 10 or so years ago, a tram<\/span> track\nran. It's now under<\/span> the road as the tozai<\/i> line of Kyoto's\nsubway.<\/p>\n\n\n

Almost everything in the picture above is hidden from the road. The front<\/span> of the building to the left of center can be seen from some vantage\npoints along the road (including in the first photo above), but that's\nabout it. This shot is looking down a hillside<\/span> covered with azaleas, but\nit's not the big hillside on the southern end of the site visible from the\nroad.<\/p>\n\n

The picture above shows many levels. The driveway<\/span> just behind the\nforeground plants is well below where I was<\/span> standing, and the people\ncongregating in the little clearing are well below the driveway. They're\nall way<\/i> above the filtering tanks and people walking in the\nbackground, which themselves are way<\/i> above the main entrance and\nSanjo Street.<\/p>\n\n

Yet, at this point, I've still got 90 vertical feet of paths, gardens,\nterraces, and azaleas before I reach<\/span> the top.<\/p>\n\n

Looking at a small part of the same view from the side rather than the\ntop, you see more of the beauty than the layout...<\/p>\n\n

There were many little mini garden areas, and being a water<\/span>-treatment\nplant, water fountains were plentiful (and log-shaped, no less, to better\nblend in with the plentiful nature).<\/p>\n\n

Besides the major walkways, there were little paths everywhere, connecting terraces, gardens, and walkways.<\/p>\n\n

Some paths are not obvious at first glance. The only indication<\/span> of a\npath<\/span> in the picture below is the parasol carried by an unseen stroller.<\/p>\n\n

The circular thing above houses some kind of valve. It sports<\/span> a wheel<\/span> on\ntop not unlike one might use to steer a schooner.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The city really pulls the stops out for the four days it's open. They\nhire a bazillion<\/span> kindly guides and dress them as private security guards.\nThey give everyone who comes in a round<\/span> uchiwa<\/i> to fan themselves with\n(the sun is unmercifully hot these days), and a bottle<\/span>-shaped can of water\n(source: Genuine Kyoto City Tap Water).<\/p>\n\n

Because it's hot and there's so much climbing involved, they've set up\nrest areas at convenient locations (with, unfortunately, ash trays to make\ngetting cancer all the more convenient as well).<\/p>\n\n

The tent shown below is at the very top of the site, on top of the “No. 2 Highest Water-Storage Area.”<\/p>\n\n
