Every year, the local water-treatment plant opens its gates<\/a> for\nfour days so the public can enjoy its manicured gardens of about 4,600 azalea shrubs<\/a>\n(tsutsuji<\/i> — \u3064\u3064\u3058 — in Japanese).<\/p>\n\n

Kyoto's Keage\nWater-Treatment Plant<\/a> (\u8e74\u4e0a\u6d44\u6c34\u5834)<\/span> is on a sprawling<\/span> hillside less a\nkilometer<\/span> from our place, and I've long enjoyed the brilliantly colored\n(mostly insanely bright pink) hillsides of shrubs that are visible from the\nroad, but until I ventured<\/span> inside yesterday, I didn't<\/span> realize how much I'd\nbeen missing. The place<\/span> is huge<\/i>, and full of amazing and beautiful\nsights.<\/p>\n\n

It rises 68 meters (225 feet) in elevation from its lowest point to its\nhighest, and has many paths, terraces, and azalea-covered hillsides along\nthe way.<\/p>\n\n

There are apparently a good number of huge water-storage tanks, but for\nthe most part they're underground, with their top covered in dirt and\ngrass. The picture<\/span> below looks across the “No. 2 High Water-Supply Ground”\n(the grass-covered roof of the otherwise invisible “No. 2 High Water-Supply\nTank,” I guess<\/span>), looking toward the “No. 1 Highest Water-Supply Tank”, 23\nmeters (75 feet) above.<\/p>\n\n

Next is a view of eastern Kyoto from near the front of the “No. 1 High\nWater-Storage Ground” (an impressive structure dating to 1912, and\ncertainly destined to be the subject of a later<\/span> post).<\/p>\n\n

The roof in the center is 625 meters distant (0.4 miles), and is that of\nthe main gate of the Nanzen\nTemple<\/a> (map<\/a>). The Nanzen<\/span> Temple is the location of the first few shots of one of my\nall-time most-popular posts: The Photography of Katsunori\nShimada<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Coincidentally, I'll be heading back to the water-treatment plant today\nwith Shimada-san. I went by<\/span> myself yesterday at about 1pm, and the sun was\nextremely harsh. I'm hoping<\/span> that an earlier time (9:30am-ish) will yield a\nbit<\/span> softer light. Today is the last day of this year's open house.<\/p>\n\n
