As I mentioned yesterday, Biei, Hokkaido is a really<\/span>\npretty area<\/a>, and we went three days in a row.<\/span> Each day's weather was\ndifferent, so each had its own feel.<\/p>\n\n

The fields all seem to be in different states, with some recently plowed\n(deep brown dirt), some green (grass?), some dried yellow dirt. A very few<\/span>\nhad dotted rows of tiny seedlings that could be seen only up close.<\/p>\n\n

I loved the endless combinations of rows, colors, and shapes, along with\nthe many different types of backdrops. I was forever<\/span> stopping to take\npictures; Fumie is a patient<\/span> woman.<\/p>\n\n\n

The mountain peak above is 20km (12 miles) away. The field<\/span> extended that far, if not further..... (or seemed to).<\/p>\n\n\n

That last picture above was one of the last I took<\/span> on our trip. We were tired<\/span> and heading home, but even if not, it likely would have been the last\nfor a while<\/span> because I paid<\/span> dearly to get it.<\/p>\n\n

I already was in “drive home” mode and thought I was<\/span> done with\nphotography for the day, but upon seeing the farmers and machines\nsilhouetted on the horizon, combined with the stunning green, well, I had to<\/span> stop for the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n

There were some trees in the foreground that I wanted<\/span> not to be in the\npicture, and conveniently, there were big mounds of hard dirt piled by the\nside of the very rural road we were traveling. They were three or four feet\nhigh, so I thought<\/span> to step up on them to raise my vantage point for the\nshot.<\/p>\n\n

(Farmers in the audience can certainly see where this is going....)<\/p>\n\n

In short, I was mistaken<\/span> about two things: they weren't mounds of\ndried<\/b><\/i> dirt (only the outside shell was dry and hard), and\nthey weren't mounds of dried dirt<\/b><\/i>. At my first<\/span> step onto\nthem, my shoe broke through the thin dry shell into something soft and\ngooey. I instinctively<\/span> muttered a four<\/span>-letter expletive, and indeed, it\nturns out that assessment of the substance was correct.<\/p>\n\n
