The other day I posted about a koinobori bento<\/a> that Fumie\nmade for Anthony, featuring koinobori<\/i> (carp streamers<\/a>) made\nfrom wieners.<\/p>\n\n

Today is the Children's Day<\/a>\nnational holiday in Japan, for which koinobori are flown. We saw many<\/span> more\nkoinobori flown while driving around Hokkaido than we do in Kyoto. It was nice<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

The ones above are in front of what looks like a small<\/span> hotel in the\nmiddle of nowhere, in Biei, an hour's\ndrive north of where we stayed in Furano. (A bit<\/span> of search after the fact shows that it's\nindeed a small<\/span> hotel with the odd name “With You<\/a>”)<\/p>\n\n

The Biei area is really beautiful, even though the end of April is\nprobably the worst time of year to visit. (See the references to “bland”\nand “bleak” in my previous\npost<\/a>.) In taking the picture above, we'd stopped along the side of the\nroad, as we did numerous times, to enjoy the scenery. Here's a view<\/span> from\nthe same spot, looking the other way.<\/p>\n\n\n

Apparently, these particular fields are planted with potatoes, yielding a\nbeautiful<\/span> sea of purple\nflowers<\/a> as they grow.<\/p>\n\n

For completeness, here's a view of the hotel and its koinobori from the\nnext nearest building, a small<\/span> restaurant we liked, that I'll write about\nanother day.<\/p>\n\n

The hill in front of the hotel is planted with lavender, which in early\nMay is gray and dead. I have no<\/span> doubt that it's excellently pretty in the\nsummer.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie and I are absolutely beat from our trip, having returned late\nyesterday evening. We've been completely groggy all day, as if from a\nreally<\/span> bad case of jet lag.
