We went for a short drive up to Kibune<\/a>\nyesterday, a little<\/span> area of restaurants and inns nestled in a long,<\/span> narrow\nriver valley that's been populated for at least 1,300 years. Although I\nbothered<\/span> learning the name only yesterday, we've been up that way a number<\/span>\nof times lately, with the first few pictures from this blossom & buds<\/a> post\nfrom that area, also passing through on the trip with Kyoto's bridge to nowhere<\/a>,\nand not even a month<\/span> ago, snow and funky\nicicles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The snow's all gone, of course, and soon their cherry blossoms will be\nas well, so now they're getting set up for the hot summer tourist\nseason.<\/p>\n\n

The workers above are building a sun<\/span> shade over the river, using only\nbamboo and twine (although it could be that they were cheating a bit<\/span> and\nusing wire that looked like twine.... I'm not sure<\/span>.)<\/p>\n\n

All the restaurants are by the river, since everything here is by the\nriver. The river, the road, and all buildings.... everything is nestled\ninto a strip<\/span> of land at the bottom of a valley<\/span> that's at most a hundred<\/span>\nfeet wide, and usually less. Where there are restaurants, they've terraced\nthe river, and so during the summer, they build platforms on the terraces\njust inches above the water. The river<\/span> acts like a natural<\/span> air\nconditioner, and it's apparently really pleasant.<\/p>\n\n

In the foreground of the picture below (which is a bit<\/span> upstream from the\nconstruction pictured above), you can see the platform supports sticking\nout of the water, and in the background, they've started to assemble the\nplatforms.<\/p>\n\n

In the picture above, between the river and the road, is a narrow<\/span> little\nwedge of a restaurant<\/span> that we ate at (part of the \u3072\u308d\u6587<\/a> complex there). The food was<\/span> good and the prices were reasonable. I had<\/span> kitsune udon<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Prior to eating at that restaurant, we walked by and Fumie is checking\nit out. Some of their menu is shown in the squares on the wall. Coffee (hot\nor cold) is only 400 yen ($3.50), with the most expensive thing shown\nbeing 1,200 yen ($10) oyakodon<\/i><\/a>, the first\npart of the clever name literally meaning “parent and child,” referring to\nthe chicken and egg main ingredients.<\/p>\n\n

At one point along our short walk, I made a<\/span> self portrait in one of the\nroadside mirrors ubiquitous in Japan (in the mountains, placed at strategic\npoints along sharp bends), unfortunately catching one of the even more\nubiquitous and universally ugly utility poles. In my reflection<\/span>, the brown\nand pink growth on my shoulders is my son.<\/p>\n\n

The picture at the top of this post is taken about a mile<\/span> downstream, from a bridge<\/span> where the road crosses over.<\/p>\n\n
