During our trip to Ise (pictures here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>) a few<\/span> months ago, we\nfound ourselves at a beach<\/span> around sunset. There was a little<\/span> trickle of a\nstream<\/span> running off from the mountains, down onto the beach.<\/p>\n\n

There wasn't much water at the time, but where the flow finally decided\nto dive into the sand, it left behind a deposit<\/span> of the sand it was\ncarrying. Over the course of a second<\/span> or two, this sand would build up\nenough that it would become a little<\/span> wall, diverting the water to one side\nor another. The result<\/span> was a mesmerizing,<\/span> constantly updated pattern in the\nsand.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sometimes it moved laterally quite quickly (inches per second), and\nsometimes it marched outwards. It was always<\/span> changing.<\/p>\n\n

Being sunset with clouds on the horizon, it was getting quite dark (and\nI was<\/span> still learning to use my new lens), so the picture quality isn't\ngreat. The pictures<\/span> below are after sunset, and through the magic of high\nISO, wide aperture, and short exposure, look much brighter than it actually\nseemed.<\/p>\n\n
