This is to protect them for the winter.\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\"><a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FIMG_5587.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/IMG_5587.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:175%'>Not a &#8220;Cat in the Hat&#8221; Display<\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>This wrapping was done, I'm sure, to protect whatever is inside from\nsnow damage, and also perhaps to keep it warm, and to protect it from bugs\n(who prefer to nest in the straw rather than the plant itself).<\/p>\n\n<p>In any case, it looked sort of freaky.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had only my small point-n-shoot, and Shimada-san didn't even have his\ncamera with him.
