I tried some long-exposure shots in the same quaint area of Kyoto — Gion — in\nwhich I got<\/span> some night\ncherry-blossom shots<\/a> last week. All the photos<\/span> last week were\nhand-held, short-exposure shots, so today, I thought<\/span> I'd try a followup<\/span> to\nthe nighttime long-exposure\nshots<\/a> from my previous post.<\/p>\n\n

It was much more crowded now that the blossoms are in full bloom. Pretty\nmuch everyone in Japan who owns a camera<\/span> was there with their camera. But despite<\/span> the crowd, it was really nice. The only people<\/span> who didn't have a\ncamera<\/span> were the geisha and maiko who were walking or scurrying about.<\/p>\n\n

In order to “see through” all the people, I used a<\/span> tripod and relatively\nlong exposures. The one above<\/span> is 42 seconds, at f\/22. The small<\/span> aperture\n(large “f” number) means that something has to remain unmoving for a while<\/span>\n(or be really bright) to actually make it into the image, and as such,\npeople milling about would become translucent, or even remain\ninvisible.<\/p>\n\n

My biggest worry was that a car might come along and ruin the shot with\nits bright lights, but it all worked out well. (It seems that I caught<\/span> some\nkind of repeating yellow light in lower-right corner of the shot above, but\nI have<\/span> no idea what it was.)<\/p>\n\n
