The preschools in this part of Kyoto had a Momma<\/span> Volleyball tournament\nyesterday, and I went<\/span> along to try my hand at some sports photography.<\/p>\n\n

It's really really difficult to photograph volleyball well. I knew it<\/span>\nwould be difficult, but it turned out to be difficult on so many more\nlevels than I had<\/span> imagined, and I came<\/span> away with 6 gigabytes of mostly\nthrowaways.<\/p>\n\n

I hope to write about it more in the future, but until I find<\/span> the time,\njust a few<\/span> shots that came out okay.<\/p>\n\n\n

I really love the pose of the spiker in the shot above, but the shot\nlacks a sense<\/span> of movement. She's rising up to meet the ball coming down\ntoward her (she doesn't make contact with the ball until a full<\/span> third of a\nsecond<\/span> after this shot was taken), and she ends up just obliterating<\/i>\nthe ball into the feet of the Doshisha defender at the far right. She was an<\/span> excellent spiker on a team<\/span> full of them.<\/p>\n\n

A post-contact shot like the first one above shows more movement, but\nthen you don't get the great “spike” pose like in the second.<\/p>\n\n

The two shots above are from Doshisha's (Anthony's preschool) first\ngame, against the Moegi preschool's “A” team (of the 10 preschools that\nparticipated, eight fielded two teams). Doshisha is so small that we could\njust barely field one team.<\/p>\n\n

Moegi's “A” team apparently takes a while<\/span> to warm up,\nbecause they allowed us to score 6 points in the first game. (Games are to\n15). Many games later, they made it to the finals and were playing on a\nmuch<\/span> higher level such that there's no way we would have scored a single<\/span>\npoint. Not even close<\/span>.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nTheir opponent in the finals, Himawari's “A” team, was equally\nup there, and points were exciting minute-long affairs of pounding spike\nfollowed by amazing defense leading to a return<\/span> spike, repeated over and\nover. The final<\/span> went to an overtime tie-breaking game that Moegi's\n“A” team eventually won.<\/p>\n\n

I experimented with really slow shutter speeds, to get a sense<\/span> of\nmovement, and with fast ones to try to make things really sharp. Generally,\nI wasn't<\/span> able to get either to work well, although I suspect<\/span> the\nslow-shutter-speed approach would have been a lot<\/span> better if I'd had a\ntripod,<\/span> a steadier<\/span> hand, or less a sense<\/span> of panic about how to get a good<\/span>\nshot.<\/p>\n\n

Here's one of the faster shutter speed ones, Doshisha's team captain\ngoing up for what would become a game<\/span>-winning spike.<\/p>\n\n
