She's rising up to meet the ball coming down\ntoward her (she doesn't make contact with the ball until <span class='nobr'>a full<\/span> third of <span class='nobr'>a\nsecond<\/span> after this shot was taken), and she ends up just <i>obliterating<\/i>\nthe ball into the feet of the Doshisha defender at the far right. <span class='nobr'>She was an<\/span> excellent spiker on <span class='nobr'>a team<\/span> full of them.<\/p>\n\n<p>A post-contact shot like the first one above shows more movement, but\nthen you don't get the great &#8220;spike&#8221; pose like in the second.<\/p>\n\n<p>The two shots above are from Doshisha's (Anthony's preschool) first\ngame, against the Moegi preschool's &#8220;A&#8221; team (of the 10 preschools that\nparticipated, eight fielded two teams). Doshisha is so small that we could\njust barely field one team.<\/p>\n\n<p>Moegi's &#8220;A&#8221; team apparently takes <span class='nobr'>a while<\/span> to warm up,\nbecause they allowed us to score 6 points in the first game. (Games are to\n15). Many games later, they made it to the finals and were playing on <span class='nobr'>a\nmuch<\/span> higher level such that there's no way we would have scored <span class='nobr'>a single<\/span>\npoint. <span class='nobr'>Not even close<\/span>.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nTheir opponent in the finals, Himawari's &#8220;A&#8221; team, was equally\nup there, and points were exciting minute-long affairs of pounding spike\nfollowed by amazing defense leading to <span class='nobr'>a return<\/span> spike, repeated over and\nover. <span class='nobr'>The final<\/span> went to an overtime tie-breaking game that Moegi's\n&#8220;A&#8221; team eventually won.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='026165' href=\"\/i\/JEF_026165.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_026165_sm.jpg\" width=\"321\" height=\"480\"\nalt=\"A Future in Beach Volleyball? -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2007 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i026165\"\ntitle=\"Toddler with hands behind his back looking like he's giving beach-volleyball signals\"\/><\/a><br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D200 + Nikkor 17-55 f\/2.8 @ 30mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>160 sec, f\/4.5, ISO 500 &mdash;\n<a  href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJEF_026165.jpg\">map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href=\"\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JEF_026165.jpg\">nearby photos<\/a><\/span><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:175%'><span class='nobr'>A Future<\/span> in Beach Volleyball?<\/span><\/div>\n\n<p>I experimented with really slow shutter speeds, to get <span class='nobr'>a sense<\/span> of\nmovement, and with fast ones to try to make things really sharp.
