Physically, <span\nclass='nobr'>I was in<\/span> pretty good shape. (If you're not familiar,\nUltimate Frisbee is like soccer with <span class='nobr'>a Frisbee<\/span>\ninstead of <span class='nobr'>a ball.<\/span>)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThen, <span class='nobr'>I started<\/span> working on <a href=\"http:\/\/regex.info\">the book<\/a>. With\nevery waking moment not devoted to <a href=\"http:\/\/yahoo.com\">work<\/a>\ngoing to the book, <span class='nobr'>I soon turned<\/span> into <span class='nobr'>a blob<\/span> (gaining 15 pounds over the\ntwo years working on it). Ugh. Then Anthony was born, and any thoughts of\ngetting back in shape went out the window. Ugh.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI've long had random back aches, but once when Anthony was 7 months old\n(two years ago), <span class='nobr'>I was carrying<\/span> him and my back\njust &#8220;went out&#8221; (whatever that means -- <span class='nobr'>I\neffectively<\/span> couldn't walk for three weeks after). Since then, on my\nbest days, my back only hurts <span class='nobr'>a lot.<\/span> It's\nhorrible. <span class='nobr'>It's gotten<\/span> so that on some days I'm so\nscared about how my back will hurt that it starts to hurt all on its own.\nWhen the thought of having to put your socks on drives you to terror,\nsomething like running (which is what ultimate Frisbee is all about) is\nseems unthinkable.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nYet today, <span class='nobr'>I visited<\/span> Yahoo! and played Ultimate\nwith the guys, and actually could do much more than I'd thought. <span\nclass='nobr'>The times<\/span> when the game was most active was the best,\nas <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> less about the pain (or potential\npain &mdash; there was both) and so my fear didn't cripple me &mdash;\njust the actual pain. <span class='nobr'>It was wonderful<\/span> to get out\nthere again, even if only for perhaps 20 minutes.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe best part about it is that <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> kill\nmyself. <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd be in major pain afterward,\nbut <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> even feel achy (at least not any more\nthan <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> normally). <span class='nobr'>It\nmakes<\/span> me want all the more to get back into shape!\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> In a previous life (before the book, before the baby) I used to play ultimate Frisbee with friends at Yahoo.
