\n\nDuring the three-month ordeal of autofocus problems with my Nikkor 70<\/span>-200\nf\/2.8 zoom, between suspecting a problem<\/a> and finally having it fixed<\/a> by Nikon, I learned<\/span> a lot<\/span> about SLR autofocus — how it works, and how best to\ntest it.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nThere are plenty of autofocus test charts available on the web, but all of\nthem were severely deficient in one way or another, so I ended<\/span> up making my\nown. Its development<\/span> progressed over time as I tried<\/span> different approaches,\ndiscarding what didn't work and refining what did. (The chart I used in November<\/a> shows\nelements of both.)\n\n<\/p>

\n\nAfter Nikon finally fixed my equipment and I was<\/span> able to retest it with the\nfinal version of the chart, I was pleased<\/span> not only with how well my\nequipment worked, but also with how easily and confidently my chart allowed\nme to confirm it.\n\n<\/p>

\n\nSo, I'm finally<\/span> ready to release my chart, with copious and verbose\ninstructions on how to use it, as another of my photography-tech posts:\n\n<\/p>
