Kyoto is a photogenic town, but it's not all shrines and cherry\nblossoms. Not far from<\/span> where I live,<\/span> somewhat hidden from the civilized\nworld, is the saddest, most dilapidated, most forsaken<\/i> place I have<\/span>\never been in my life: Kyoto University's Kumano Dorm (\u718a\u91ce\u5bee).<\/span><\/p>\n\n \n\n\n

Last fall, on the same day I took the vine & bamboo photos in yesterday's post<\/a>, as well\nas the photos that went into the awesome (if I do<\/span> say so myself) fall-foliage desktop<\/a>, I made a<\/span> visit to Kumano Dorm to get a picture<\/span> of a scene<\/span> that I'd seen from\nthe street while passing by: fall-foliage yellow leaves that had covered\nsome abandoned cars like a fresh<\/span> snowfall.<\/p>\n\n

I ended up walking around the grounds, and had an experience like I'd\nnever had before. The only word<\/span> I can<\/span> think that even comes close to\ndescribing this place is “forsaken.” It was eerie — I've\nbeen in poor third-world countries and in communist Eastern-European\ncountries, but I never<\/span> felt farther from humanity<\/i> than at this\nlittle spot in the middle of Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

I'll show more pictures from that trip when I get<\/span> around to processing\nthem (UPDATE:<\/b> they're here<\/a>), but having\nrun across them when processing yesterday's vine & bamboo pictures, I thought<\/span> I'd post at least one of them today.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
