{"id":323,"date":"2007-01-02T12:47:07","date_gmt":"2007-01-02T03:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-01-02\/323"},"modified":"2007-01-02T12:47:07","modified_gmt":"2007-01-02T03:47:07","slug":"american-food-in-kyoto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2007-01-02\/323","title":{"rendered":"American Food in Kyoto"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>I enjoy <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-12-31\/319\">Japanese\nfood<\/a>, but occasionally get <span class='nobr'>a craving<\/span> for quintessentially American food\nlike <span class='nobr'>a good<\/span> burger or, for breakfast, pancakes, eggs, and hash browns.\nRecently <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> the opportunity to enjoy both here in Kyoto, and although <span class='nobr'>I\nhave<\/span> only one data point for each, they were sufficiently good enough to\nrisk <span class='nobr'>a recommendation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Freshness Burger<\/h2>\n\n<p>\nIn the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.mycal.co.jp\/vivre\/shop\/v_kitaoji\/index.html\">Vivre<\/a> at\n<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;om=1&amp;q=35.045119,135.758357&amp;spn=0.001173,0.00338\">Kitaoji\/Marutamachi<\/a>,\non the first floor across from Mr. Doughnut (barf!) is <span class='nobr'>a restaurant<\/span> with\nthe unpromisingly generic name &#8220;Freshness Burger.&#8221; <span class='nobr'>I tried<\/span>\ntheir <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.freshnessburger.co.jp\/freshnessburger\/menu\/index.html\">Classic\nBurger<\/a>, and it was excellent. Lots of fresh veggies stacked up to make\n<span class='nobr'>a formidable<\/span> burger, not much different from the picture on <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.freshnessburger.co.jp\/freshnessburger\/menu\/index.html\">their\nsite<\/a>.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThey have <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.freshnessburger.co.jp\/freshnessburger\/shop\/index.html\">locations<\/a>\nall over the country (and in Korea as well).\n\n<\/p>\n\n<h2>Speak Easy<\/h2>\n\n<p>After my <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-11-21\/284\">fall foliage trek with\nNils<\/a>, he introduced me to <span class='nobr'>a small<\/span> cafe near <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;om=1&amp;z=19&amp;q=35.038977,135.782374\">Higashioji\/Kitayama<\/a>\ncalled &#8220;Speak Easy,&#8221; which bills itself as an &#8220;American style\ncafe&amp;bar.&#8221;\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speakeasy.gr.jp\/day.html\">breakfast menu<\/a> (good\nuntil 6pm) shows lots of tasty things like eggs and toast and hashbrowns.\nOddly, pancakes are not available. <span class='nobr'>I was torn<\/span> between the breakfast menu\nand their burgers, which <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> told were good, but it's easier to get <span class='nobr'>a\ngood<\/span> burger than <span class='nobr'>a good<\/span> American breakfast, so <span class='nobr'>I opted<\/span> for breakfast.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI had french toast for the first time in many years, and it was excellent. <span class='nobr'>It was not<\/span> the sickeningly sweet style <span class='nobr'>I feared,<\/span> but more like the kind <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span>\nat home when <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a kid<\/span> (thanks Mom).\n\n<\/p>\n\n<hr width='50%' align='left'\/>\n\n<p>Both places had English menus, but <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> get the impression that\nanyone <span class='nobr'>I interacted<\/span> with at either place actually spoke English.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy Japanese food, but occasionally get a craving for quintessentially American food like a good burger or, for breakfast, pancakes, eggs, and hash browns.
