As I mentioned in the previous post<\/a>, we spent\ntwo nights at a traditional<\/span> ryokan<\/a>. Ryokan\nprices are generally quoted per person, not per room, because food is such\na major<\/span> part of the stay. In the two<\/span> dinners and two breakfasts we had\nthere, we feasted like kings.<\/p>\n\n

In the picture below, the lady who ended up serving all our meals is\ndescribing something about our first evening's dinner to Fumie, as Anthony\ndances in his yukata<\/a>. He was very<\/span> tired and a bit<\/span> punchy, but it was his first time to wear a robe<\/span>\nor yukata, and he was enjoying it (and was “going\ncommando<\/a>” and was enjoying that as well).<\/p>\n\n

Before eating, we asked the lady to take a picture<\/span> for us. It was sort<\/span>\nof comical to see this middle-aged lady trying to wield my Nikon D200 with\nits big Nikkor 17<\/span>-55\/2.8 (with hood, which I generally<\/span> keep on), a large<\/span> SB800<\/a>\nflash, and a Lumiquest<\/span> Pocket\nBouncer<\/a> attached. But she got<\/span> a nice<\/span> shot.<\/p>\n\n

It was way, way<\/b> too much food for three, much less the two it was\nmeant for. In the picture<\/span> above, Anthony is checking out a spiny lobster<\/a>. I'm not a<\/span>\nbig seafood fan, so I had<\/span> never heard of these. In Japanese, it's called\nise ebi<\/i> (\u4f0a\u52e2\u6d77\u8001),<\/span> which translates to “Ise shrimp”\n(where “Ise<\/a>” is the name\nof the area we were in). It's one of<\/span> the local favorites, and you can even\nsee in the pictures at the top of this post that the painting on the back\nwall is of these critters.<\/p>\n\n

It tasted just like shrimp, and not at all like lobster. It may be<\/span>,\nthough, that it would have tasted like lobster if it had been cooked; I\ndon't<\/span> know.<\/p>\n\n

There was seafood galore. On the oval<\/span> skillet in front of the lobster\nthing were fried muscle of some sort. Behind it is a bowl<\/span> filled with ice\nand topped with sashimi<\/a>\n(slices of raw fish). Behind it, slightly to the left (and well out of\nfocus) is a deep<\/span>-fried whole fish. To the right<\/span> of the sashimi is a plate<\/span>\nwith breaded & fried shrimp, veggies, and another type of whole\nfish.<\/p>\n\n

Other things you can't see in these pictures include slices of\nexquisitely done roast beef, some raw octopus in a slimy<\/span> seaweed-ish kind\nof soup, rice (of course), pickled veggies, cooked clams, a small<\/span> salad, a\npot<\/span> filled with crab & tofu & veggies, and various other little\nthings I can't<\/span> remember and wouldn't even know what they were if I\ncould.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

We ate until it hurt, yet the leftovers could have fed a small<\/span>\ndeveloping nation. In the end<\/span>, I felt bad<\/span> at both the waste and my waist.<\/p>\n\n\n

Our first breakfast consisted of another whole fish, eggs (in the\ncovered pot at left), raw squid (below the fish), a small<\/span> salad with ham, a\npacket<\/span> of shiso<\/a>-flavored\nseaweed, rice and miso\nsoup<\/a>, pickled vegetables, and a bit<\/span> of fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n

Breakfast #2<\/h2>\n\n

I thought I took some pictures of our second dinner, but I can't<\/span> find them <\/b><\/p>\n\n

For our second breakfast, they brought extra for Anthony, so we ended up\nwith six<\/b> whole baked fish, three salads (with ham), poached eggs,\nrice, soup, pickled-veggies, and just way too much other stuff.<\/p>\n\n

In front of Anthony in the picture above is a white<\/span>\/blue bowl, a closeup<\/span>\nof which follows. They're little tiny fish sprinkled over a bed<\/span> of grated\ndaikon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

On our way home, we went to the Toba Aquarium<\/a>.\nHaving had sea creatures for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and now\nentertainment and learning, it was time to try something else, such as ice\ncream for lunch.<\/p>\n\n
