{"id":315,"date":"2006-12-26T23:09:52","date_gmt":"2006-12-26T14:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-12-26\/315"},"modified":"2006-12-26T23:09:52","modified_gmt":"2006-12-26T14:09:52","slug":"my-new-computer-is-fast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-12-26\/315","title":{"rendered":"My New Computer is Fast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>The <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-12-05\/300\">new Dell\ncomputer<\/a> <span class='nobr'>I ordered<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a while<\/span> ago actually arrived ahead of schedule, two\nweeks ago, but <span class='nobr'>I came<\/span> down with <span class='nobr'>a cold<\/span> the evening it arrived, and am only\njust feeling good enough to write about it.<\/p>\n\n<p>In short: <b>it rocks<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its processor actually has a slower GHz rating than my old computer, but\nit's <span class='nobr'>a Core<\/span> 2 Duo, and each of its dual processors is much faster than <span class='nobr'>a\nsimilarly<\/span>-rated Pentium. It's fast. <span class='nobr'>My old computer<\/span>'s name was\n&#8220;<span style='font-size:85%'>WINFOO<\/span>&#8221;. This one is &#8220;<span style='font-size:85%'>ZIPPY<\/span>&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>It showed up one Wednesday at about noon. <span class='nobr'>I pulled<\/span> it out of the box, and while wondering what <span class='nobr'>a little<\/span> slidy\nthing on the top did, <span class='nobr'>I was surprised<\/span> to find out that it released the side\nof the computer, so <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> see inside.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/IMG_5461.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5461_sm.jpg\" width=\"667\" height=\"500\"\nalt=\"Inside guts of my new Dell -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2006 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i5461\"\nindexhint=\"left\"\nstyle=\"border:solid 15px black\"\ntitle=\"New Dell Precision 390 with side taken off and insides visible\"\/><\/a><br\/><span\nstyle='font-size:175%'>Inside guts of my new Dell<\/span><\/div>\n\n<p> Cool. <span class='nobr'>I remember<\/span> when you had to remove five screws, then slide the\nwrap-around cover off of the guts of the computer, just to see inside.\nMaintenance was <span class='nobr'>a nightmare<\/span>; this is much nicer.<\/p>\n\n<p>After hooking it up, <span class='nobr'>I booted<\/span> it, and over the next week or two, roughly in order:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n  <li><p>Removed a bunch of crap I don't want (anything related to MSN, Windows Messenger, or Outlook).<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Did a <a href=\"http:\/\/windowsupdate.microsoft.com\">Windows Update<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>Not much was<\/span> updated, so <span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> Dell ships with the latest patches installed.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Tidied up the Start &gt; Programs menu (why can't items be kept alphabetized automatically?)<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Launched Internet Explorer to fetch something, and ran into my first unexplained program crash.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Tried again, successfully, and was able to install <a\n  href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/windows-defender\/\">Windows Defender<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/\">Firefox<\/a> and configured it:<\/p>\n       <ul>\n         <li>brought over my bookmarks and saved passwords<\/li>\n         <li>Installed extensions:\n              <ul>\n                <li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/3905\/\">Exif Viewer<\/a><\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/3829\/\">Live HTTP Headers<\/a><\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/158\/\">Tabbrowser Preferences<\/a><\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/59\/\">User Agent Switcher<\/a><\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/60\/\">Web Developer<\/a><\/li>\n              <\/ul><\/li>\n\n         <li>Hand tweaked some things one the <b>about:config<\/b> page:\n              <ul>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server\">network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server<\/a>: 6<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Network.http.pipelining\">network.http.pipelining<\/a>: true<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Network.http.pipelining.maxrequests\">network.http.pipelining.maxrequests<\/a>: 30<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Network.http.redirection-limit\">network.http.redirection-limit<\/a>: 10<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Network.prefetch-next\">network.prefetch-next<\/a>: false<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Layout.spellcheckDefault\">layout.spellcheckDefault<\/a>: 2<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Keyword.URL\">keyword.URL<\/a>: http:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Nglayout.initialpaint.delay\">nglayout.initialpint.delay<\/a>: 0<\/li>\n                <li><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Content.notify.ontimer\">content.notify.ontimer<\/a>: false<\/li>\n              <\/ul><\/li>\n       <\/ul><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed English-language drivers for my <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.usa.canon.com\/consumer\/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&amp;fcategoryid=238&amp;modelid=13799\">Canon\nPixma MP810<\/a> printer\/scanner.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Mapped old computer's drives to virtual drives on the new\ncomputer. (Why can't <span class='nobr'>I map<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a whole<\/span> drive? <span class='nobr'>I had to<\/span> do them in\nparts.....)<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Installed <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-11-30\/293\">this\nphoto<\/a> as my desktop background image.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/messenger.yahoo.com\/\">Yahoo!\nMessenger<\/a> and spent time configuring it to remove <span class='nobr'>a bunch<\/span> of\ncrap.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Installed <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop\/index.html\">Adobe Photoshop\nCS2<\/a> and copied over the scripts I'd written for it (such as the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/photo-tech\/calendar\/\">Calendar-Template\nbuilding script<\/a> <span class='nobr'>I wrote<\/span> about earlier). And wouldn't ya know it, just\nmy luck &mdash; <span class='nobr'>I activated<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a new<\/span> copy of CS2 <span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> before CS3 is\nannounced!<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshoplightroom\/\">Adobe Lightroom<\/a> and was pleased with its speed on the new hardware.<\/p> <\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/cygwin.com\/\">Cygwin<\/a> and brought over my home directory from the old computer.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Remapped the keyboard so that the caps-lock key functions as <span class='nobr'>a\ncontrol<\/span> key, as God intended, by creating and using the <b>CapsLockIsCtrl.reg<\/b>\nfile as described <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/c2.com\/cgi\/wiki?RemapCapsLock\">here<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Cleaned a bunch of random stuff from <b>C:\\Program Files\\<\/b>, but found that <span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> remove the &#8220;MSN Gaming Zone&#8221; and &#8220;xerox&#8221; directories. <span class='nobr'>Why on earth<\/span> can't <span class='nobr'>I remove<\/span> these directories?<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and Installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irfanview.com\/\">IrfanView<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/reader\/\">Adobe Reader<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysql.com\/\">MySQL<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed Fidelity Investments' <a href=\"http:\/\/personal.fidelity.com\/accounts\/activetrader\/\">Active Trader Pro<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>Downloaded and installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/\">Apple iTunes<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n  <li><p>Spent ages moving files over from the old computer. <span class='nobr'>I'm still<\/span> not done.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>A bazillion other things I can't remember....<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n   \n\n<p>\nI ran into a few odd things during this process:\n<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li><p>After three or four days, suddenly, Windows Updated installed dozens of items. <span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> Dell really doesn't ship with the latest patches installed,\n       which <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> understand, but why did Windows Update wait so long?<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>A fantastic feature of Firefox is that you can type words or phrases in its address bar and have that turn into <span class='nobr'>a web<\/span> search (via Google or Yahoo!, for example).\n       This no longer works for me. Even if <span class='nobr'>I reset<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Keyword.URL\">keyword.URL<\/a> to its default, and ensured that\n       <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/kb.mozillazine.org\/Keyword.enabled\">keyword.enabled<\/a> is\ntrue, it still doesn't work. This is very frustrating for me because I'm so\nused to using that feature. <span class='nobr'>If someone<\/span> has an idea on how to get it to\nwork, <span class='nobr'>I'd love to<\/span> hear it.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>My old machine, which needed to be reboot every hour or two whether being used or not, did not require <span class='nobr'>a reboot<\/span> from 18 hours before the new computer arrived,\n       to almost <span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> after. Very strange.<\/p><\/li>\n\n  <li><p>The new machine has four disk drives in it, but it's eerily silent. Very weird, but <span class='nobr'>I appreciate<\/span> it. <span class='nobr'>My old one<\/span> sounded like <span class='nobr'>a jet<\/span> engine at arm's length.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The most wonderfully odd feeling <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> with this computer is that it\nhasn't crashed yet. <span class='nobr'>Not even once<\/span>.
