{"id":300,"date":"2006-12-05T22:54:19","date_gmt":"2006-12-05T13:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-12-05\/300"},"modified":"2006-12-05T22:54:19","modified_gmt":"2006-12-05T13:54:19","slug":"ordered-a-new-computer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2006-12-05\/300","title":{"rendered":"Ordered a New Computer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>\n\nGetting sort of sick of having to reboot my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2005-09-23\/75\">horribly flaky Windows<\/a>\nsystem 10 times <span class='nobr'>a day<\/span> (<span class='nobr'>I kid<\/span> you not), I've finally succumbed to getting <span class='nobr'>a\nnew<\/span> system.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite being a geek for the better part of 40 years, <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> buy my\nfirst computer until <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> 30 (and <span class='nobr'>I still<\/span> have it below my desk &mdash;\nalmost 10 years old, it's the machine with which <span class='nobr'>I wrote<\/span> my last two <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-21\/218\">books<\/a>). <span class='nobr'>In the years<\/span>\nsince, I've bought two <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-04\/209\">laptops<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>a system<\/span> for\nFumie while we were in America, and systems for both of us here.<\/p>\n\n<p>I built my current system from parts, building exactly what <span class='nobr'>I wanted.<\/span>...\nexcept stability and disk performance. <span class='nobr'>So this time<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I opted<\/span> for <span class='nobr'>a pre<\/span>-built\nmass-market (hopefully no-headache) system, from Dell.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because I want an English version of Windows, and <span class='nobr'>I want<\/span> it to be\npre-installed by the company that builds the machine (again, the emphasis\nbeing on &#8220;no headaches&#8221;), my choices were limited. <span class='nobr'>HP also sells<\/span> them, but <span class='nobr'>I hate<\/span> my last HP printer so much, <span class='nobr'>I just couldn<\/span>'t think\nabout going with HP.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dell lets you customize a machine extensively during the order process,\nwhich is great. <span class='nobr'>I ended<\/span> up getting <span class='nobr'>a fairly<\/span> bare-bones system &mdash; it\nhas, of course, CPU, memory, power supply, disks, graphics card, and the\nlike, but the only &#8220;extra&#8221; component <span class='nobr'>I added<\/span> was <span class='nobr'>a Firewire<\/span>\ncard. <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> even get <span class='nobr'>a monitor,<\/span> but that's because the Dell 20\" LCD I've\nhad for years is still spectacular.<\/p>\n\n<p>I'd decided a week or so ago to get it, but hadn't placed the order\nbecause the current promo special wasn't something <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> benifit from. <span class='nobr'>My waiting<\/span> paid off, because when <span class='nobr'>I looked<\/span> yesterday, <span class='nobr'>I found<\/span> that they had <span class='nobr'>a\none<\/span>-day 10%-off special. Sweet! I've seen reports of 4GHz for simple air-cooled\nsetups. Unfortunately, Dell won't let me do that. Oh well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My primary use of the thing, besides work, will be for photo processing,\nwhich means mostly <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshoplightroom\/\">Adobe Lightroom<\/a>\nand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop\/\">Adobe Photoshop<\/a>.\nLightroom is much more demanding, needing every ounce of CPU and disk\nperformance pretty much all the time. (In comparison, Photoshop doesn't\nreally require much disk performance, and its CPU needs are more on and\noff.)<\/p>\n\n<p>Sort of off topic, but I was so impressed with Lightroom when <span class='nobr'>I first<\/span>\ntried it that <span class='nobr'>I bought<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q\/bc?s=ADBE&amp;t=1y\"\nclass='quiet'>Adobe stock<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>At the moment<\/span> it's doing well enough that\nthe profits (were <span class='nobr'>I to<\/span> sell) could buy me about five of these new systems,\nwhich is nice. (Had <span class='nobr'>I bought<\/span> the stock just <span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> earlier than <span class='nobr'>I did,<\/span> it\nwould have added another three of these systems to the current paper gain\n&mdash; doh!) And it might sound odd, but <span class='nobr'>I wish<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I hadn't<\/span> bought the stock.\nYou see, <span class='nobr'>I also bought<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=aapl\">Apple\nComputer<\/a> on the same day, and it's done <i>much<\/i> better than Adobe.\nIn retrospect, <span class='nobr'>I wish I<\/span>'d put it all into Apple.<\/p>\n\n<p>(Traditionally, experience has shown that <span class='nobr'>I come<\/span> from the &#8220;<i>Buy\nhigh sell low<\/i>&#8221; school of investments, so these nice gains are\nwoefully off my normal track record, so the long-term investor would be\nwise to heavily short both of these companies.... at least until <span class='nobr'>I sell!<\/span>\n\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, Dell's web site tells me that my machine will be shipped from\n&#8220;overseas&#8221; on about Dec 18th, and that it'll take about <span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> to get to me\nafter that. <span class='nobr'>So it looks<\/span> like <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a Christmas<\/span> present from myself to look\nforward to....<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Getting sort of sick of having to reboot my horribly flaky Windows system 10 times a day (I kid you not), I've finally succumbed to getting a new system.<\/p> <p>Despite being a geek for the better part of 40 years, I didn't buy my first computer until I was 30 (and I still have it below my desk -- almost 10 years old, it's the machine with which I wrote my last two books).
