ALBANS, W.Va. - Christ is missing from Christmas in this small\ntown. The community's holiday display has a manger with shepherds, a\nguiding star, camels and a palm tree, but no baby Jesus, Mary or Joseph.\nThe parks superintendent said Jesus was left out because of concerns about\nthe separation of church and state. But Mayor Dick Callaway said it was\ndone for purely technical reasons: ''It's not easy to put a light-up\nrepresentation of a baby in a small manger scene, you know.''\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"ixmas_article\"\nstyle=\"margin-bottom:0\"\ntitle=\"ST. But Mayor Dick Callaway said it was\ndone for purely technical reasons: ''It's not easy to put a light-up\nrepresentation of a baby in a small manger scene, you know.''\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n\n<p>Considering how <strike>pejorative<\/strike> offensive the term &#8220;Xmas&#8221; is (it is, after\nall, &#8220;<b>Christ<\/b>mas&#8221; with &#8220;Christ&#8221; X'ed out),\nyou can't help but question the journalistic integrity of the writer (Tom\nBreen) and Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n<p>Take this headline in comparison: <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20061202\/ap_on_re_us\/police_tv_show\"><b>Ariz.\ncop had black men rap away ticket<\/b><\/a>, which, like the first, is\ncurrently on Yahoo's &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/i\/964\">most\npopular news<\/a>&#8221; list. <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> think anyone would put up with this\nheadline rewritten as <span style='white-space:nowrap'>&#8220;<b>Ariz. pig\nhad black men rap away ticket<\/b>&#8221;<\/span> or <span\nstyle='white-space:nowrap'>&#8220;<b>Ariz. cop had niggers rap away\nticket<\/b>,&#8221;<\/span> so why do people put up with &#8220;Xmas&#8221;?\n\n<\/p>\n\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> Derek <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-12-03\/297#comment-2842\">commented<\/a>\nthat the use of &#8220;Xmas&#8221; shouldn't be <span class='nobr'>a problem<\/span> because (1) it\ndoesn't bother him, (1) it's only <span class='nobr'>a newspaper<\/span> headline, and (3) my argument\nis not meaningful because <span class='nobr'>I used<\/span> the word &#8220;pejorative&#8221; instead\nof &#8220;offensive&#8221; or &#8220;insulting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>I have to admit that I used &#8220;pejorative&#8221; even though <span class='nobr'>I knew<\/span>\n&#8220;offensive&#8221; was probably more appropriate, because <span class='nobr'>I liked<\/span> the\nring to &#8220;pejorative&#8221;. <b>\ud83d\ude42<\/b> However, as to\n&#8220;Xmas&#8221; not being offensive or insulting, well, if you can't\nimagine that <b>crossing out the whole point of the holiday<\/b> would be\noffensive to those who still consider that point, <span class='nobr'>I'm not sure<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span>\nexplain it to you. (And along the same lines, using <span class='nobr'>a word<\/span> that's offensive\nis fairly pejorative, no?)<\/p>\n\n<p>I understand that Christmas has no religious meaning to many, and that's\nfine, but it doesn't reduce the offensive nature of &#8220;Xmas.&#8221; I'm\nnot <span class='nobr'>a police<\/span> officer, but <span class='nobr'>I consider<\/span> &#8220;pig&#8221; to be offensive. <span class='nobr'>I'm not black<\/span>, but <span class='nobr'>I consider<\/span> &#8220;nigger&#8221; offensive. Even if you're\nnot Catholic, <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> expect you to consider &#8220;Xmas&#8221;\noffensive.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I couldn't help but to laugh at the irony when I saw this Associated Press article on Yahoo!
