However, the subject of today's post is what\n<span class='nobr'>I saw<\/span> when <span class='nobr'>I looked<\/span> up.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nKyoto's impressive autumn colors are in full force now, but there are some\ntrees that are slower in turning, and evergreens that won't turn at all,\nand the resulting range of colors is something that really appeals to me. <span class='nobr'>I looked<\/span> up and found <span class='nobr'>a screen<\/span> that's common this time of year: highly dynamic\ncolors mixed in <span class='nobr'>a highly<\/span> dynamic space (that is: lots of depth and color to\nthe scene).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI fired off three quick shots, focusing at points close, middle, and far. <span class='nobr'>You can see<\/span> these three shots by mousovering the first three boxes below\nthe image:\n\n<\/p>\n\n<div style='text-align:center; The &#8220;Mix&#8221; button above shows <span class='nobr'>a reduced<\/span>-sized\nversion of the result. (The image at the top of this post is small crop\nfrom <span class='nobr'>a half<\/span>-sized version.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe mixture is all three images combined with Photoshop's\n&#8220;Darken&#8221; blend mode, after having loaded them into individual\nlayers of <span class='nobr'>a single<\/span> document. <span class='nobr'>As if Photoshop<\/span>'s multitude of <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2005-11-26\/104\">filters<\/a> aren't enough to\nlearn, there are oodles of &#8220;blend modes&#8221; which influence how\ntwo images can be combined to produce <span class='nobr'>a third<\/span> (or, in this case, how three\nimages can be combined to produce <span class='nobr'>a fourth<\/span>).\n\n<\/p>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JEF_02325x_layers.jpg\" width=\"649\" height=\"470\"\nalt=\"Photoshop layers dialog showing how this image was made\"\nclass=\"img_center\"\nid=\"i02325x_layers\"\nstyle=\"border:solid black 5px; margin: 20px auto\"\ntitle=\"Photoshop layers dialog showing how this image was made\"\/>\n\n<p>\n\nI have a whole book on the subject of Photoshop blending modes, as I <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-02-04\/143\">once mentioned<\/a>, but <span class='nobr'>I\nhaven't<\/span> really done much yet other than flip through it.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIn any case, the <b>Darken<\/b> blend mode is easy to understand: at each\npoint of the canvas, the images are compared and the darkest of them is\nkept for that spot in the result. What's difficult for me to understand,\nintuitively, is what that will result in. <span class='nobr'>In this case<\/span>, it's an almost\nsurreal, paint-like quality.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI then brightened it up just <span class='nobr'>a tad<\/span> to make up for the overall darkening,\nincreased the contrast <span class='nobr'>a bit,<\/span> and that's it.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nI seem to like taking multiple shots of the same scene with different focus\nor different depth-of-field, as <span class='nobr'>I found<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> other sets of images\nthat might work with this technique. Unfortunately, they had too much\nmovement among the images (such as branches blowing in the wind, or\nrecomposition on my part) that <span class='nobr'>I couldn't<\/span> get <span class='nobr'>a good<\/span> result.
