In appreciation, they gave Anthony <span class='nobr'>a box<\/span> of chocolate. <span class='nobr'>It was almost<\/span> dinner time, but <span class='nobr'>I said<\/span> that he could have some after\ndinner.<\/p>\n\n<p>We try to limit his junk food, as I've <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-01-27\/137\">written before<\/a>. We don't\ndeny it totally, but save it for special occasions so that it doesn't\nbecome habit. <span class='nobr'>He does enjoy<\/span> it when he gets it, like all kids, especially\nchocolate.<\/p>\n\n<p>After dinner, he excitedly passed out peaces to everyone, and finally\nbit in to his own. <span class='nobr'>He chewed<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a little<\/span> bit, then made a &#8220;yuck&#8221; face and went\nto Mommy so he could spit it out. <span class='nobr'>By the time<\/span> Mommy got something for him\nto spit into, he was crying. <span class='nobr'>I gave him<\/span> some milk so he could wash the\nyucky chocolate taste out of his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The chocolate was one of the high-cocoa-content variety (86%) that have\nbecome popular in the last decade. <span class='nobr'>The higher<\/span> the cocoa content, the less\nthe sugar content, and hence the more bitter it becomes. This was mildly\nbitter, but certainly not the silky smooth ultra sweet taste of &#8220;normal&#8221;\nmilk chocolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I said &#8220;see, chocolate is yucky!&#8221; hoping to dissuade him from <span class='nobr'>a future<\/span>\nlife of junk-food dependency, to which he replied &#8220;<span class='nobr'>I usually<\/span> like chocolate,\nbut <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> like <i>this<\/i> chocolate.&#8221; Drat, too late!<\/p>\n\n<p>We should have given him this kind of chocolate very early on, so that\nhe'd develop an immediate dislike of it. Of course, he'd eventually realize\nthat there were other kinds, but an early lack of desire for sweets could\nhave been nice.<\/p>\n\n<p>I thought I'd post this as a suggestion to new parents: give your kids\nsome high-cocoa chocolate early on, and perhaps save yourself from some &#8220;<span class='nobr'>I\nwant<\/span> chocolate!&#8221; hassles later.<\/p>\n\n\n<br clear=\"all\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday while returning from Anthony's gymnastics class (it was jump-rope day), I gave directions to a couple of lost tourists from northern Japan.
