{"id":2892,"date":"2020-03-12T18:40:49","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T09:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2020-03-12\/2892"},"modified":"2020-03-12T18:40:49","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T09:40:49","slug":"my-second-longest-ride-double-century-ride-to-ise-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2020-03-12\/2892","title":{"rendered":"My Second-Longest Ride: Double-Century Ride to Ise City"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='ic' itemscope itemtype='http:\/\/schema.org\/Photograph'><a name=\"i2152\" href='\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2152.jpg' itemprop='image'\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2152_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"518\"\nalt=\"\"\nid=\"ii7p_2152\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">iPhone 7+ at an effective 32mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>500 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.2, ISO 25 &mdash;\n<a href='\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJFi7p_2003_2152.jpg'>map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href='\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2152.jpg'>nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Yours Truly<\/span>\n<br\/>Overlooking the Ise Bay\n<br\/>at the 185km (115mi) of a 326km (202mi) bicycle ride\n<meta itemprop='url' content='http:\/\/regex.info\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2152.jpg'\/>\n<meta itemprop='creator' content='Jeffrey Friedl'\/>\n<meta itemprop='copyrightHolder' content='Jeffrey Friedl'\/>\n<meta itemprop='dateCreated' content='2020-03-11'\/><\/div>\n\n<p>I'm coming out of blogging hibernation to write about <span class='nobr'>a bicycle<\/span> ride <span class='nobr'>I did<\/span>\nyesterday. <span class='nobr'>I'm pretty<\/span> happy with myself for it, so in keeping with using my blog as <span class='nobr'>a\ndiary,<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I'm putting<\/span> the story here.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><iframe height='405' width='590' frameborder='0' allowtransparency='true' scrolling='no' src='https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/3176068613\/embed\/c706c4e7b8ed927c15469e07505abf70abdf0853'><\/iframe>\n<br\/>the ride <a href='https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/3176068613'>at Strava<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>There aren't many photos, both because <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> only my cellphone and wasn't stopping <span\nclass='nobr'>a lot,<\/span> and because the stupid iOS app <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> using (Halide) decided to not actually\nsave all but one of the photos that <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> in the first <span class='nobr'>eight hours. )-:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>So, having seen friend Vincent's <a href='https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/3115940644'>ride to Ise City last month<\/a>, <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd give it <span class='nobr'>a try.<\/span> Vincent's group took the train back, but <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> I'd cycle back, making it <span class='nobr'>a round<\/span> trip.\nAt 326km (202 miles), it displaces last year's <a href='\/blog\/2019-05-28\/2885'>304km adventure with Gorm<\/a> as my second-longest ride,\nfollowing my longest (<a href='\/blog\/2017-11-05\/2833'>408km two-laps-around-Lake Biwa ride<\/a>) in 2017.<\/p>\n\n<p>Yesterday was my longest solo ride, my second <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>double century<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>, and my 40th <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>century<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n<p>It took 16 hours; the first few hours were in the dark, as were the last\nfew hours.<\/p>\n\n<p>The morning dark was sometimes lit by <span class='nobr'>a lovely<\/span> full moon,\nbut it was mostly cloudy, <span class='nobr'>a condition<\/span> that would persist most of all day. <span class='nobr'>And unlike<\/span> the weather forecast (<span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>warm and sunny!<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>), it was cold and sprinkly with strong wind much of the day.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was mentally much easier than <span class='nobr'>I expected.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>The key seems<\/span> to have been\nthat <span class='nobr'>I approached<\/span> it as two separate rides: <span class='nobr'>a 180km<\/span> (112mi) ride to the cafe in Ise City\nwhere <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> have lunch, and then, by the way, almost as an afterthought, just <span class='nobr'>a short<\/span> 140km (87mi) ride to get back home.<\/p>\n\n<p>The first 45km (28mi) were on <span class='nobr'>a flat<\/span> bike path that barely counts as cycling, so by the time <span class='nobr'>I\nactually<\/span> started riding on mountain roads, <span class='nobr'>I had only<\/span> 135km (84mi) until that ride ended at the\nlunch cafe. This could be tough for me if there were <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of mountains or <span class='nobr'>I\nhad<\/span> to do it quickly, but neither applied this time: <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> no particular schedule, and this part\nof the route had only 2,160m (7,090') of climb, which is nothing to sneeze at, but it's well within the realm of reason for\nme.<\/p>\n\n<p>Once off the bike paths and onto the <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>real<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> ride, it didn't start smoothly.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight' itemscope itemtype='http:\/\/schema.org\/Photograph'><a name=\"i2141\" href='\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2141.jpg' itemprop='image'\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2141_sm.jpg\" width=\"431\" height=\"575\"\nalt=\"\"\nid=\"ii7p_2141\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">iPhone 7+ at an effective 28mm &mdash; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>30 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/1.8, ISO 125 &mdash;\n<a href='\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJFi7p_2003_2141.jpg'>map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href='\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2141.jpg'>nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Scene of the Crime<\/span>\n<br\/>looking back to where I'd come from\n<br\/>( the highlighted marks on the curb are almost certainly from my tires )\n<meta itemprop='url' content='http:\/\/regex.info\/i\/JFi7p_2003_2141.jpg'\/>\n<meta itemprop='creator' content='Jeffrey Friedl'\/>\n<meta itemprop='copyrightHolder' content='Jeffrey Friedl'\/>\n<meta itemprop='dateCreated' content='2020-03-11'\/><\/div>\n\n<p>At the 47km point, in a wide-open road in the middle of nowhere with <i>pristine<\/i> pavement, <span class='nobr'>I crashed<\/span> in the most monumentally-stupid way <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> imagine.<\/p>\n\n<p>As I approached a slight curve into an intersection, my cycling computer beeped <span class='nobr'>a navigation<\/span> notification, and <span class='nobr'>I glanced<\/span> down\nfor just <span class='nobr'>a moment.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>A split<\/span> second after returning my concentration to the road, <span class='nobr'>I rammed<\/span> straight into the sweeping curve of the\nhigh concrete curb....  <span class='nobr'>a sweeping<\/span> curve that had been <a href='https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/8Ejg1s2AS4LsqjZF7'>plainly visible<\/a> as <span class='nobr'>I approached<\/span> during\nthe prior 45 seconds. <span class='nobr'>I was going<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a relatively<\/span>-lazy 23kph (14mph).<\/p>\n\n<p>Oh, how I wish I could see the look on my face in the 0.1 seconds between realization and impact. <span class='nobr'>It's\nabsolutely<\/span> inconceivable to me how <span class='nobr'>I did<\/span> what <span class='nobr'>I did.<\/span> <span\nclass='nobr'>I spent<\/span> much of the next 14&frac12; hours of the ride contemplating it. <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> come up with anything. <span class='nobr'>I'm still<\/span> utterly dumbfounded.<\/p>\n\n<p>This was the second <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>real<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> crash in my five-year-old cycling life,\nand considering the sheer unadulterated stupidity on display, <span class='nobr'>I was extremely<\/span> lucky and came away\nrelatively unscathed. <span class='nobr'>I suffered<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a compound<\/span> fracture of my pride, but after\nthat there's just <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> of road rash on my knees, my left knee is <span class='nobr'>a swollen and\nshould make a swell bruise,<\/span> and <span class='nobr'>I ripped<\/span> holes in both knees of my new winter kit, the\nmost-excellent <a href='https:\/\/intl.velocio.cc\/products\/mens-zero-bib-tight?_pos=2&amp;_sid=63c412bf8&amp;_ss=r'>Velocio ZERO\nwinter bib tights<\/a>. They have <span class='nobr'>a repair<\/span> service that <span class='nobr'>I now<\/span> get to try.<\/p>\n\n<p>(A day later, the half-dollar-sized circle of road rash on the skin of my knee hurts, but no other pain.)<\/p>\n\n<p>I brushed myself off and checked the bike; it was fine. <span class='nobr'>I continued<\/span> on, and at one point thought\n<span class='nobr'>I should<\/span> maybe pour some water over the wound on my knee, which <span class='nobr'>I could<\/span> most\ndefinitely feel, but could not see because the big hole in the tights was inexplicably 6\" above the wound. After another\nkilometer, <span class='nobr'>I came across<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a vending<\/span> machine and thought <span class='nobr'>I\nshould<\/span> fill up on water, only to find that my wallet was gone. <span class='nobr'>I trekked<\/span> back to the site of the\ncrash and picked it up.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, with my ride having now started in earnest, <span class='nobr'>I entered<\/span> the mountains and started to tick off the kilometers. <span class='nobr'>At first<\/span> they\nwent very, very slowly. Sometimes I'd grind into the wind for what seemed like 15~20 minutes, only to notice that I'd gone only\none kilometer. Literally. <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> know how long it actually took, but it was very disheartening.<\/p>\n\n<p>The stretch from between 50km (31mi) into the ride, and 80km (50mi) into the ride, was the most mentally-difficult of the\nentire day, but once <span class='nobr'>I crossed<\/span> the <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>100km until lunch<span\nclass='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> mark, <span class='nobr'>I brightened<\/span> up. Then when <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> to <span\nclass='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>90km until lunch<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>, the halfway point of the ride to lunch, suddenly <span\nclass='nobr'>I felt<\/span> that everything was downhill from there, so to speak. <span class='nobr'>I was halfway<\/span> there,\nand after lunch, <span class='nobr'>I'd just have<\/span> to ride home... the ride home almost didn't even count, mentally. <span\nclass='nobr'>It made no<\/span> sense to me even as <span class='nobr'>I thought<\/span> it, but the feeling was there and <span\nclass='nobr'>I was<\/span> happy for it. Mentally, <span class='nobr'>I was in<\/span> great shape for the remaining 235km\n(146mi).<\/p>\n\n<p>Two and a half hours, and 50km (31mi) after the crash, <span class='nobr'>I finally<\/span> came across <span class='nobr'>a\nconvenience<\/span> store, so <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> the opportunity to put <span class='nobr'>a dressing<\/span> on my\nknee (which requires me to strip the bib tights, and hence why <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> do it at the scene). <span\nclass='nobr'>I de<\/span>-stuck it from the inside of the tights, and applied <span class='nobr'>a sheet<\/span> of Mepitel Film\n(similar to <a href='https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tegaderm'>Tegaderm<\/a>) from the first-aid stuff that <span class='nobr'>I started<\/span> to\ncarry after <a href='\/blog\/2015-06-29\/2593'>this ride<\/a> where <span class='nobr'>a member<\/span> crashed.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, <span class='nobr'>I\nfelt a<\/span> bit better that because the wound was now dressed, <span class='nobr'>I wouldn't<\/span> have to rip off the scab when <span\nclass='nobr'>I got<\/span> home.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the convenience store, I also enjoyed <span class='nobr'>a coffee<\/span> and <span class='nobr'>a rice<\/span> ball. The 19-minute stop was the only major stop during the first 180km\nto the cafe for lunch.<\/p>\n\n<p>The route was lovely, with few big thoroughfares. <span class='nobr'>I went across<\/span> quaint bridges and big dams, and had many lovely vistas. <span class='nobr'>But as I<\/span> mentioned, the stupid Halide app ate all the photos.<\/p>\n\n<p>At some point I was calculating my overall average speed (about 21kph \/ 13mph), which includes climbing up mountains, stops for photos and traffic lights\n(and crashes), etc., and realized that <span class='nobr'>I might<\/span> be able to get back to Kyoto in time for <span class='nobr'>a salsa<\/span> dance party. I've been dancing salsa for the\nlast year or so, and really enjoy it. So, <span class='nobr'>I used that<\/span> to drive my pace just <span class='nobr'>a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>During the last hour or two of the to-lunch ride, the wind, which had been intermittently gusty, started to solidify into <span class='nobr'>a brisk<\/span> tailwind. <span class='nobr'>It was lovely<\/span>, but <span class='nobr'>I knew<\/span> I'd pay for it on the return.<\/p>\n\n<p>Once I arrived to Ise City, I took photos at <span class='nobr'>a shrine,<\/span> and in front of the train station. Of course, they're gone like the others.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just about noon, I arrived at <a href='https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/nouEMxEP93m4vg9A7'>the Funae Cafe<\/a> for lunch, and felt that for the most part,\nmy ride was done. Not heavy, but also not stopping. <span class='nobr'>The temperature<\/span> also dropped down to 5\u00b0 (41F).<\/p>\n\n<p>I had not planned for the rain at all... the forecast was sunny and warm all day. <span class='nobr'>At least<\/span> for Kyoto. <span class='nobr'>I neglected<\/span> to check the forecast\nfor where <span class='nobr'>I was<\/span> actually going to be. (I'd been up\nsince 3am.) So, <span class='nobr'>I tried<\/span> the second <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Red Bull<span\nclass='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> of my life (the first having been last year on the long ride with Gorm.) That and <span class='nobr'>a\ncoffee<\/span> and some Coke seemed to do the trick... <span class='nobr'>I felt great<\/span> the rest of the way home.<\/p>\n\n<p>I felt great, but was still pretty slow, even on the descents. Unlike how my great kit kept me warm, my shoes\n(Fizik R5 Artica winter shoe) did little, and my toes were frozen for much of the ride. <span class='nobr'>In the shower<\/span>, <span class='nobr'>I was shocked<\/span> to see that they had turned gray. <span class='nobr'>I'd never<\/span> seen such gray\nskin on the body of <span class='nobr'>a live<\/span> person... it was <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> scary. <span class='nobr'>But I massaged<\/span> them under hot water,\nand the color slowly came back.<\/p>\n\n<p>In any case, I got cleaned up and made it to salsa dancing with 10 minutes to spare.<\/p>\n\n<p>Overall, it was a great ride. <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> to enjoy 228km (142mi) of new roads for me, and score\nmy second double century. <span class='nobr'>It was much<\/span> easier, mentally and physically, than many lesser rides\nin my past. <span class='nobr'>I'm not why<\/span>, but <span class='nobr'>I do<\/span> know that the splitting of it mentally, into two rides,\nwas just amazing for my psyche. <span class='nobr'>I hope I<\/span> can do that in the future with equal success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I'm coming out of blogging hibernation to write about a bicycle ride I did yesterday.
