My road bike, a Rose X-Lite CRS 3100 Di2 that I got<\/span> 2½ years ago<\/a>,\nsuffered a fatal<\/span> case of death on a ride<\/span><\/a> the other day, when the\nderailleur came off the bike, ripping part of the frame with it.<\/p>\n\n

In that moment, the frame was rendered completely useless. A carbon<\/span> frame is difficult to repair in the best of times, but\ndamage like this, in this location, means the end of the frame. It could<\/span> never be ridden again.<\/p>\n\n

No real idea why it would suddenly just give way. It could<\/span> happen, I suppose,<\/span> if a stick<\/span> or something got caught in\nthe chain, but that wasn't the case. It was at<\/span> the start of the first steep hill of the day, so it was when I put<\/span>\nin a fair<\/span> bit of power through the drivechain.<\/p>\n\n

It could have been a slowly-growing crack finally gave way, or that it got damaged during a recent<\/span> flight<\/a>. Perhaps most likely is that during a moment<\/span> of inattentiveness\n15 minutes earlier during a stop,<\/span> I'd let the<\/span> bike tip over and flop to the ground... perhaps that caused some damage? We'll never\nknow.<\/p>\n\n

My riding partners, who had a lot more experience with on-the-road repairs, set things up so that I could<\/span> at least push the\nbike along. Luckily, I wasn't<\/span> too far from a train<\/span> station, so I walked<\/span> the 2½km there (thank goodness for cleat covers). The train<\/span> company wouldn't let me on the train with the bike, so I left<\/span> it at the station and took the train home myself,\nswitching to a car<\/span> to return to pick up the bike.<\/p>\n\n

I left the next day on a trip<\/span> to The States<\/a>, so I didn't<\/span> have time to do\nanything further. I'll have to get another frame, a new<\/span> bike.... or maybe both! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
