One of the Costs of Apple Ownership&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<p>I normally do all my computer work on <span class='nobr'>a MacBook Pro;<\/span> the convenience of being able take it anywhere\nwith me is worth the cramped feeling of having <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>just<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> 1TB of disk and\n<span class='nobr'>a small<\/span> screen. Unfortunately, my MacBook Pro, which is about 3&frac12; years old, went south yesterday, and now and it freezes up\nafter <span class='nobr'>a minute<\/span> or three. <span class='nobr'>I spent<\/span> all day trying stuff to fix it, but it seems to be <span class='nobr'>a hardware<\/span> issue, So\n<span class='nobr'>I called<\/span> up Apple Support to arrange repair.<\/p>\n\n<p>While creating my repair case, the guy asked whether it was covered by AppleCare, their extended warranty. <span\nclass='nobr'>I'd had the<\/span> three years of AppleCare, but it expired <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> months ago; <span\nclass='nobr'>I replied<\/span> <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span><i>Apple products never break down while covered by\nAppleCare<\/i><span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n<p>His reaction was priceless: <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span><i><span class='nobr'>I can't<\/span> tell whether that's <span class='nobr'>a compliment<\/span> or an insult.<\/i><span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>Hah. I guess it's both.<\/p>\n\n<p>I'm writing this post on an Apple desktop machine from 2009, which is still humming along just fine. But Apple's cutting edge\nproducts like their phones and laptops squeeze just <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> more out of the space available than anyone\nthought possible until they actually demonstrate it's possible by releasing the product, and that kind of cutting edge stuff comes\nwith this kind of cost of ownership... it breaks down <span class='nobr'>a lost<\/span> more than <span class='nobr'>a\nsturdy<\/span> old-tech product. <span class='nobr'>In my experience<\/span>, that's often right after the warranty expires.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, the delivery service just picked it up. Last time <span class='nobr'>I did<\/span> this (~8 years ago?) <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> it back quickly... maybe three days. <span class='nobr'>I hope it<\/span>'s the same this time....<\/p>\n\n<hr\/>\n\n<p><b>Update:<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Well, that was quick. It was picked up by the courier service on Wednesday night, and at 8am this morning (Friday) <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span>\nan email from Apple that said they have received my computer. <span class='nobr'>I expected<\/span> to eventually get <span class='nobr'>a message<\/span> offering an estimate for\nthe repair and asking whether <span class='nobr'>I wanted<\/span> to proceed, but less than seven hours later, at 2:45pm, <span class='nobr'>I got a<\/span> message informing me\nthat <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>my repair request is complete<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> and that it was already shipped back.<\/p>\n\n<p>There's no information as to whether they actually did anything, and if so, how much they'll charge me, but <span class='nobr'>I suspect<\/span>\nthat either they did nothing and are returning my broken computer, or it'll cost the maximum fixed fee of about 80,000 yen\n(~$730), which had already been reserved on my credit card.<\/p>\n\n<p>In any case, I'll find out tomorrow... it's schedule to arrive before noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I normally do all my computer work on a MacBook Pro; the convenience of being able take it anywhere with me is worth the cramped feeling of having \"just\" 1TB of disk and a small screen.
