The fall-foliage season is mostly over in Kyoto. During this season I re<\/span>-discovered and explored some wonderful areas\nwithin walking distance from my house.<\/p>\n\n

It started when a friend suggested that I visit<\/span> a temple<\/span> nearby, sending a map<\/span> link, so I headed<\/span> off towards it.<\/p>\n\n

The map link brought me to one of the entrances to a big<\/span> graveyard behind the Konkaikomyou-ji Temple, an area with a lot<\/span>\nof visual richness. I went in<\/span> to explore.<\/p>\n\n

Despite the English word “<\/span>gravestone”<\/span>, there are no bodies buried here, just little fragments of bone in a cavity<\/span> under the\nstone, as described in “<\/span>Kotsuiri \u2014 Placing of the Bones<\/a>”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

They're often beautiful and photogenic, especially the older ones.<\/p>\n\n

But this was the fall-foliage season, so I was<\/span> first drawn to some colorful leaves near the northern edge of the graveyard,\nand I looked<\/span> over the fence to see this:<\/p>\n\n\n

I couldn't see much, but the partially-visible roof made me guess that it was the back garden of a temple.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Anyway, I continued to explore the paths in the graveyard, and at the end of one came to a larger<\/span> affair:<\/p>\n\n\n

The wabi-sabi<\/a> is strong here. Its size suggests<\/span> importance, and parts of it\nare still in good shape, but other parts are leaning precariously, and there are few right angles left anymore. But the fact<\/span> that it's\nstill here means, I think,<\/span> that someone's still paying for its space on temple grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n

Reading the information on these stones is an art, one of which I have<\/span> only the most basic abilities.\nHere's the side that has the date:<\/p>\n\n

Across the top are two characters, \u300c\u677e\u300dmeaning “<\/span>pine”<\/span> and \u300c\u6df3\u300d, which my dictionary says means “<\/span>pure”<\/span>.\nI don't<\/span> know whether these are headings for the dates that come underneath them, or whether they are a single<\/span>\nword (and if so, whether it's \u300c\u677e\u6df3\u300d\u300c<\/span>\u6df3\u677e\u300d),<\/span> so I'm off to a bad<\/span> start.<\/p>\n\n

But, down the right side is clearly a date<\/span> that reads \u300c\u660e\u6cbb\u4e09\u5341\u516b\u5e74\u516b\u6708<\/span>\u5341\u65e5\u6b7f\u300d,<\/span> which means\n“<\/span>Died Aug 10, Meiji 38<\/span>”<\/span>. The 38th year<\/span> of the Meiji era is 1905.<\/p>\n\n

The writing is somewhat stylized, as you can tell by comparing the font seen in the sentence above with that seen on the stone.\nIn particular, I'd not recognize<\/span> the middle character as \u300c\u5e74\u300doutside the context of an obvious date.<\/p>\n\n

Down the left side is also clearly a date,<\/span> though which date I'm not so sure. It looks<\/span> to be \u300c\u662d\u548c\u56db\u5e74\u5341\u6708\u5efe\u4e00<\/span>\u65e5\u6b7f\u300d,<\/span>\nwhich seems to me to mean “<\/span>Died October 21st, Showa 4<\/span>”<\/span> (year 4 of the Showa era was 1929). But again,\nthe character that looks to be \u300c\u5e74\u300ddoesn't look quite right, so I might<\/span> be missing something. <\/p>\n\n

Across from this large grave was a more<\/span> modern, and more colorful one that had clearly been tended to recently:<\/p>\n\n\n

But, across from it next to the bigger one was an older one still:<\/p>\n\n

I started on a mission to see how old of a stone<\/span> I could<\/span> find. Soon I came<\/span> across a date<\/span> with\nan era name I'd never seen:<\/p>\n\n

I had to look up the era name, \u300c\u4eab\u4fdd\u300d,<\/span>\nso pulled up Wikipedia's List of Japanese era names<\/a>, and\nwas excited to find that the Kyoho era<\/a> went from 1716 to 1736,\nso this year-19 date equates to 1734. It's older<\/span> than America.<\/p>\n\n

The date was clear to me, but the two small characters \u7532 and \u5bc5 after the year number were a mystery.<\/span> Later that evening,\nManseki-san told me it was from the Chinese sexagenary cycle<\/a>, a\nsixty<\/span>-year cycle that seems to be in the same class as the 12-year cycle we sometimes hear spoken of with phrases like “<\/span>year of\nthe horse”<\/span>. Indeed, doing the calculations for 1734, we find it equates to year 51 of that cycle, which is denoted by those two\ncharacters included on the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n

The current era is in year 29, and the previous era ran for 63 years, so it's easy to forget that sometimes the eras lasted\njust a few<\/span> years (they last only as long as their emperor). In the past<\/span> 150 years there have been only four eras, but in the 150\nyears prior to that there were 21. This part of Kyoto used to be on the fringe, and has been used for burial rituals for over a\nthousand<\/span> years, so with well over a hundred<\/span> era names that might apply to things I find,<\/span> I have to<\/span> look up any but the most\nrecent. It can be<\/span> a bit<\/span> exciting as I scroll<\/span> backwards in time and still don't find a match.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This seems to have a mini life story. From what I can<\/span> tell, he was born on Sep 18th in\nthe year \u6587\u4e45<\/span>2 (1862), joined families (by marriage, I assume<\/span>), and died\non May 8 of \u662d\u548c<\/span>17 (1942), which would put him just shy of his 80th birthday. But it seems<\/span>\nto say “<\/span>81 years old”<\/span> at one point. I'm probably<\/span> just misunderstanding something, but\nI wonder<\/span> whether they simply lost track of the years. In counting<\/span> from the birth year (\u6587\u4e45<\/span>2)\nto the death year (\u662d\u548c<\/span>17) one has to know the details of six eras (\u6587\u4e45<\/span> covered three years,\n\u5143\u6cbb<\/span> just two, \u6176\u5fdc<\/span> covered 4, then \u660e\u6cbb<\/span> and \u5927\u6b63<\/span> covered 43 and 15, respectively, and then they\nwere still in \u662d\u548c).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now I suppose they have an app\nfor computing time spans across eras, but I can't<\/span> imagine how they kept it straight back then. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n

The three old stones above were clearly part of a set,<\/span> and carried the dates, left to right, of\n\u5ef6\u5bf32 (1674),<\/span>\n\u4eab\u4fdd12 (1727),<\/span> and\n \u4eab\u4fdd20 (1735).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

At first I couldn't figure out that leftmost date because I couldn't<\/span> find any reference to\u300c\u5ef6\u5bf3\u300d<\/span>on the Wikipedia eras page<\/a>. I didn't<\/span> realize that it was the oldest\nstone I'd so far found.<\/p>\n\n

It turns out, I learned that night thanks to Manseki's help, that\u300c\u5bf3\u300dis the old way to write\u300c\u5b9d\u300dso the Wikipedia list\nhad\u300c\u5ef6\u5b9d\u300d.<\/span> I've since updated the Wikipedia page to include the original way it was written, and added a photo<\/span> of the gravestone above\n(showing the date as originally written) to the Wikipedia page for that Era<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Wandering back toward my starting point to complete a loop<\/span> that enclosed the temple I'd been peeking at over fences, I came back<\/span> to within a few<\/span> steps of where I was<\/span> pointed to on the map, and found the entrance to the temple:<\/p>\n\n

So this<\/i> is where my friend had intended me to go. Now I understand<\/span>. It's amazing.<\/p>\n\n

And the wigglegram that I posted<\/span> the other day<\/a> came from here, on yet\nanother morning visit a few<\/span> days after this one.<\/p>\n\n

Many people, when they walk through the gate into the garden area, immediately take a photo<\/span> of the buddha...<\/p>\n\n
