I had quite the photogenic day on Monday, with a local<\/span> outing in the morning to see a nearby<\/span> temple's fall foliage, then a ride<\/span>\ninto the mountains to see by bicycle some of the places seen during the weekend's “<\/span>First Taste of Kyoto\u2019s Fall-Foliage Season, 2017 Edition<\/a>”<\/span> post.<\/p>\n\n

Today's post is about the bicycle ride (view at Strava<\/a>)<\/small>.<\/p>\n\n

The photo that opens this post is the entrance path to the Koetsu-ji Temple (\u5149\u60a6\u5bfa),<\/span> which I pass on\nthe edge of town just before entering the mountains and making the climb toward Kyomi Pass. We first saw it on my blog three weeks\nago, in all green, here<\/a>. Indeed, as I\nspeculated<\/span> there, it's spectacular dressed in fall colors, but also as expected, it was crowded.<\/p>\n\n

I took the photo above expecting it to simply illustrate “<\/span>crowded”<\/span>, but I really<\/span> like its vibe, so I made<\/span> desktop-background\nversions.<\/p>\n\n

My post “<\/span>Cycling to Kyoto\u2019s Ochiba Shrine Amid the Fall Colors<\/a>”<\/span>\ntwo years ago is similar to today's, but has a better<\/span> photo of the bridge,\nhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I wonder how long ago the bridge was in use. It now leads<\/span> to nowhere (the road just stops), because, I assume,<\/span> the construction\nfor the current modern roads completely changed the landscape in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n

The main thing I wanted to do on this ride was make the short climb up to the Soren-ji Temple, which until now I'd visited\nonly by car.<\/p>\n\n

I made a segment<\/span> on Strava for it<\/a>, but 50 of\nthe 52 registered rides are incorrectly attributed to this segment due to bad GPS data. In looking<\/span> at\nthem, most were recorded with Strava's iPhone app, and the pattern of wonky GPS is really consistent. I'm\nguessing<\/span> that they all suffered the insidious iOS snap-to-road\n\u201cFeature\u201d<\/a> long enough for the iPhone to think they were on this steep climb, until realizing that they couldn't be and yanking\nthem back to the flat road they were actually zipping by on.<\/p>\n\n

As it is, I think at the moment only the two slowest recorded rides are actually riding this 400m @ 11% climb. Mine is the\nfaster of the slowest, so I've got the moral “<\/span>KOM”<\/span>, at least until\na real<\/span> cyclist shows up. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

From the data above it's clear that it's not common among cyclists, but it's so lovely up there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the temple the road descends sharply, then dead ends as far as cars are concerned, but there's a path<\/span> that a bicycle<\/span> can\ntake...<\/p>\n\n

I'm not squared up with the gate and the building in the shot above because the lady seen in the prior photo was camped where I\nwanted<\/span> to be, standing in front of her tripod seemingly doing some light browsing on her phone, completely ignoring her camera,\nthe shrine, and folks waiting for her to move. After a while,<\/span> I finally<\/span> gingerly asked whether she was standing in that particular\nspot for a particular<\/span> reason, and she replied in English “<\/span>I don't<\/span> speak Japanese”<\/span>. So I repeated<\/span> my question in English, and she\nsaid that no, she wasn't there for a particular<\/span> reason, and went back to her phone.<\/p>\n\n

This was fairly jarring. It was clear that she wasn't trying to be mean or troublesome, but that she simply didn't\nconsider that she might be bothering others. One could<\/span> guess from her accent where she was from, and roll your eyes\nand think “<\/span>yeah, those<\/i> people tend to be pretty rude”<\/span>, but I try<\/span> so hard not to do that. Each person is\nindividual.<\/p>\n\n

I finally ask whether she'd be so kind as to move just a bit<\/span> over, at which point it finally<\/i> dawned on her,\nand she moved slightly out of the way. Japanese folks looking on smiled in appreciation of my efforts.<\/p>\n\n

And as inconsiderate as she was, she willingly agreed to snap a photo<\/span> for me when I asked.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

I then spent a few minutes digging among the leaves looking for part of my polarizing filter... I had dropped<\/span> it while taking\nthis photo<\/a> and the clickspring that holds the glass in had apparently\nsprung out and away. I hoped<\/span> I might<\/span> find it, but didn't. One of the<\/span> Japanese photographers even helped digging through the leaves\nfor a while.<\/span> Very kind.<\/p>\n\n

Then I headed back home...<\/p>\n\n

I didn't make the detour to see the maple this time. I'd done so<\/span> two years ago (blogged here<\/a>) and came away with a flat<\/span> and missing bolts on my cleats.<\/p>\n\n

However, I did take the next detour...<\/p>\n\n

It was a lovely road that went for about a kilometer,<\/span> at a mild<\/span> average of 5%. It ended<\/span> at a graveyard.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I made a Strava<\/span> segment<\/a> for this ride as well, as there wasn't already one.<\/p>\n\n

The path continued past the cemetery. Normally I'd not take this kind of path on my road bike, but it was mostly grass over dirt,\nso it was quite easy riding except for the occasional rock or log...<\/p>\n\n

At this point I was about a minute's walk from the Himuro Shrine that I posed<\/span>\nabout seven years ago<\/a>, but I couldn't<\/span> get to it. It's just as<\/span> well, because I wanted<\/span> to return to take pictures of the road\nI'd just ridden.<\/p>\n\n

I returned to the main road and continued up and over Kyomi Pass.<\/p>\n\n

As I was flying down from Kyomi Pass toward Kyoto, I passed<\/span> Henry Foster<\/a> making his way up. I'd ridden<\/span> with\nHenry on one of my first rides<\/a> years ago. I did\na<\/span> quick U-Turn and killed myself to catch up to him to say “<\/span>hi”<\/span>, and to snap a blurry<\/span>\nphoto...<\/p>\n\n

Then I continued down again. About 10<\/span> years ago, a section<\/span> of twisty mountain road was replaced by a wide,<\/span> modern road with\nsweeping turns, and until now I'd never taken the old section of road on a bike,<\/span> so I thought<\/span> I'd give it a go<\/span> today.<\/p>\n\n\n

By the time I came by the temple seen in the first photo of this article, it was almost 5pm and few people were around, so\nI could<\/span> get a nicer<\/span> photo:<\/p>\n\n

I would have liked to have taken the photo from a lower<\/span> vantage point, but another photographer's head was\nimmediately below my camera as I took<\/span> the shot.<\/p>\n\n\n

I had quite the photogenic day on Monday, with a local outing in the morning to see a nearby temple's fall foliage, then a ride into the mountains to see by bicycle some of the places seen during the weekend's \"First Taste of Kyoto\u2019s Fall-Foliage Season, 2017 Edition\" post.<\/p>
