I had a pleasant evening yesterday, with a relaxing<\/span> boat ride on the Katsura River, in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto. An\nelementary-school friend of Manseki was in town and invited Manseki, who in turn invited some friends, which included me.<\/p>\n\n

I took the subway and tram across town. At the final<\/span> station, there's a “<\/span>Kimono Forest<\/a>”<\/span>, a small<\/span> but well-done art installation...<\/p>\n\n

Arashiyama's famous Togetsukyo<\/i> bridge has been seen on my blog many times, including\n\nhere<\/a>\nhere<\/a> and here<\/a>,\nbut never quite from this angle. It's sort of<\/span> out of focus in the background, with the haphazard posts in focus in the foreground\nlying in front of a small<\/span> waterfall, to stop the errant boat from going over. Luckily, this was as close as we got.<\/p>\n\n

A few years ago, this river flooded so high that the posts were submerged... five times over. The water<\/span> crested the bridge. I blogged<\/span> about it, and you can see a news<\/span> video at the bottom of “<\/span>A Bit<\/span>\nMore Rain in Kyoto Than Normal<\/a>”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For the “<\/span>shot”<\/span> above I took<\/span> a hand-held<\/i> high-speed exposure-bracketed burst so that I could<\/span> feed it to Lightroom's automatic HDR\nprocessing (via Library's “<\/span>Photo > Photo Merge > HDR”<\/span><\/span> command). It never<\/span> ceases to amazing me what it can\ndo with low-quality ingredients like this. I then took<\/span> a heavy<\/span> hand at some further processing, correcting the perspective distortion,\nremoving the utility wires and such in the background, and removing a few<\/span> manhole-cover like things that had been placed\nincongruously in the path.<\/p>\n\n

For the most part I'm not a fan<\/span> of HDR<\/a>, because it's usually used too\nheavily, creating an unnatural result. It's effective<\/span> here, though, to show the richness of the various kimono fabrics. It seems<\/span> that I've used this technique for only one other blog post, on some shots in “<\/span>Discovering Kyoto\u2019s Wonderful Toji-in Temple on a Tour<\/span> with NORU<\/a>”<\/span> a couple<\/span> of years ago.\n(On the other hand, I sort of<\/span> did some poor-man's HDR in “<\/span>Exposing for Single-Shot HDR<\/a>”<\/span>.)<\/p>\n\n\n
