Looking down the street from next to the construction, toward the right, it was a mad<\/span> house:<\/p>\n\n

So, instead I went up the steep road<\/a> that goes under the shrine arch\nseen two photos above.<\/p>\n\n\n

Not long past the shrine gate, I noticed<\/span> a huge<\/i> statue off to the side, and wondered how long it had been\nthere and how I had<\/span> never noticed it before:<\/p>\n\n

It turns out<\/a> that it's been there since 1955, and is 24m (80') tall. I guess<\/span> I'm not very attentive.<\/p>\n\n

I ended up taking the long way around to the other side of the “<\/span>not going to even try”<\/span> street, where it was just as\ncrowded.<\/p>\n\n

I'd never noticed this street that pitched down in zig-zag curves like a snake,<\/span> so was happy to try it despite\nthe bumpy cobblestones.<\/p>\n\n

It eventually brought me to a service road where a trash<\/span>-truck driver was replacing a “<\/span>do not enter”<\/span> rope. I guess<\/span> there was normally\none at the top, but it had been placed aside for him. So, I don't<\/span> think I'll be able to take the road again,\nnow that I know<\/span> I wasn't<\/span> supposed to have the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n

Popping out of the eastern gate, I made my<\/span> way up to Shogunzuka, where I used<\/span> to go often to try to catch a nice<\/span> sunset.<\/p>\n\n
