As I posted the other day<\/a>, I made a<\/span> visit to Suntory's Whisky Distillery\nin the Yamazaki area just south of Kyoto. Eric<\/a> and I arrived<\/span> early\nfor the tour, so we wandered a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

A public road bisects the distillery campus, and while the road then turns 90\u00b0 to wrap up behind and beyond the campus, the\nlogical straight-ahead continuation brings you to Shiio Shrine, apparently on Suntory property.<\/p>\n\n

The public road heads off to the right, pitching up sharply (~15% grade). It looked<\/span> inviting to cycle, so I came back later by bicycle<\/a> to poke around. I also made<\/span> a Strava<\/span> segment<\/a> for this road, starting with the slow climb from the\ndistillery entrance until this turn, continuing then with the steep climb after the turn.<\/p>\n\n

But for today's visit, Eric and I were<\/span> on foot, so we wandered into the shrine. The entrance<\/span> path has two\nstone gates.<\/p>\n\n\n

Just to the left of the steps in front of the gate in the photo above is a light<\/span> pole, on which there's\nan old (and to me, odd) forest-fire warning sign...<\/p>\n\n

As best I can tell, the character in the sign is a chameleon<\/span> smoking a cigarette.<\/span> Lovely<\/p>\n\n

Not far away is a little alcove with a water<\/span>-fountain feature. It seems<\/span> like it should be photogenic,\nbut I wasn't<\/span> feeling it....<\/p>\n\n
