(Fumie's friend, Machiko or Ma-chan for short, is\nfeatured in <a href=\"\/blog\/2006-11-11\/277\">my previous\npost<\/a>.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nBecause the wedding was for Fumie's friend, and she'd have various tasks\nthroughout the day, <span class='nobr'>I was on<\/span> Anthony duty, so <span class='nobr'>I left<\/span> my <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-01-10\/130\">semi-pro SLR<\/a> at home.\nStill, <span class='nobr'>I couldn't<\/span> resist bringing something, so <span class='nobr'>I pocketed<\/span> a <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.dpreview.com\/reviews\/canonsd550\/\">small Canon\npoint-n-shoot<\/a>. <span class='nobr'>It can take<\/span> some nice photos if there's enough light,\nbut there's nothing about <span class='nobr'>a wedding<\/span> or reception that has enough light, so\nall the pictures came out horrible. <span class='nobr'>The few I<\/span>'m showing in this post have\nundergone <i>heavy<\/i> post processing, including treatment with <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.picturecode.com\/\">Noise Ninja<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/IMG_5302.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5302_sm.jpg\" width=\"453\" height=\"600\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"i5302\"\/><\/a><br\/><big>Bride being given away by her father<\/big><\/div>\n\n<p>The wedding was between Fumie's friend Machiko and her fiance&eacute;\nMasaya, and was held at the Hotel Okura in Kobe, Japan. <span class='nobr'>It consisted<\/span> of <span class='nobr'>a\n10<\/span>-minute ceremony in the hotel chapel (bride given away by her father,\nexchange of rings, signing some documents) followed by <span class='nobr'>a reception<\/span>\nelsewhere in the hotel.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite some initial apprehension, Anthony performed his ring-boy duties\nperfectly. Perhaps he remembered from having done in four months ago at <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-07-15\/211\">his uncle's wedding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The budding photographer in me can't help but to criticize the hotel on\nthe lighting in their chapel. They do <span class='nobr'>a brisk<\/span> business in weddings (there\nwere 11 other weddings on Saturday) so they should <i>know<\/i> that <span class='nobr'>a mix<\/span>\nof fluorescent and incandescent lighting makes for very difficult <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-06-28\/208\">color balance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>After the wedding was the reception, which is not <span class='nobr'>a place<\/span> you want to\nbring <span class='nobr'>a four<\/span>-year-old because it's deathly boring for them. Boring means\nfussy. <span class='nobr'>But Fumie<\/span> planned well and brought the toys that would keep Anthony\noccupied, and so he was <i>wonderful<\/i> the whole day.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/IMG_5349.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5349_sm.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"535\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"i5349\"\nphotostream=\"anthony\"\/><\/a><br\/><big>Anthony\nat the reception<\/big><\/div>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/IMG_5379.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5379_sm.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"i5379\"\/><\/a><br\/>\n<big>High-school friends of the bride: Fumie, Uma-chan, and\nKei-chan<\/big><br\/> Kei-chan was with Fumie on the night Fumie and <span class='nobr'>I met.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>She got married<\/span> herself earlier this year.<\/div>\n\n<p>They had a very nice little slide show showing the couple as kids,\ngrowing up, and then as <span class='nobr'>a dating<\/span> pair. <span class='nobr'>It included<\/span> the following picture of\nthe bride and the three ladies shown in the picture above, at age 16.<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5378_sm.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"481\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"i5378\"\/><br\/>\n<big>Ma-chan (bride), Uma-chan, Kei-chan, Fumie<\/big><br\/>16 years old<\/div>\n\n<p>It was a very long day for Anthony, but even late, he was filled with\nenergy. (The bright light accounts for that picture\nhaving the best quality of any of them.) It was dramatic; Anthony joined\neveryone in clapping.<\/p>\n\n<p>The high-school friends ended up being the last ones remaining after\neveryone else had gone home, so we got <span class='nobr'>a bonus<\/span> group shot. <span class='nobr'>I handed<\/span> my tiny\nCanon point-n-shoot camera to the pro cameraman (who had at least $13,000\nworth of Canon professional equipment around his own neck) and he took this\nshot for me:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/IMG_5399.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/IMG_5399_sm.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"\nborder=\"0\"\nid=\"i5399\"\/><\/a><br\/><big>\nMe, Anthony, Fumie, Masaya, Ma-chan, Uma-chan, Kei-chan, Kei-Chan's Husband<\/big><\/div>\n\n<p>The groom was still quite nervous when that picture was taken, but\neventually relaxed <span class='nobr'>a bit.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>We all went<\/span> up to <span class='nobr'>a rooftop<\/span> garden and got <span class='nobr'>a\nwonderful<\/span> view of the port of Kobe. <span class='nobr'>It was all<\/span> quite nice.<\/p>\n\n<p>One other comment about that last picture: I'm not wearing shoes. <span class='nobr'>We'd driven<\/span> down from Kyoto with our nice clothes in the trunk, but it turns out\nthat I'd forgotten my shoes. Oops. There's no way I'd ever find my size\n(Japanese size 32, for the record), so <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> to wing it. There was <span class='nobr'>a\ndepartment<\/span> store nearby, so <span class='nobr'>I ran<\/span> over and bought <span class='nobr'>a pair<\/span> of black household\nslippers. That's what you see there.<\/p>\n\n<p>At least it's not as bad as when <span class='nobr'>I went<\/span> to India for my best friend's\nwedding. <span class='nobr'>I'd talked<\/span> to his father before going to ask about what to wear,\nand he told me quite strongly that it would be brutally hot, and that <span class='nobr'>I\nshould<\/span> wear shorts. <span class='nobr'>So I did<\/span>. <span class='nobr'>And I ended<\/span> up being horribly underdressed. <span class='nobr'>I should<\/span> have asked his mom, not his dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> They say that the quality of the photographer is much more important than the quality of the camera, and while I'm sure that's true, I felt very limited by the quality of the camera I had with me at Fumie's friend's wedding on Saturday.
