\n\nThey say that the quality of the photographer is much more important than\nthe quality of the camera, and while I'm sure that's true, I felt very<\/span>\nlimited by the quality of the camera I had<\/span> with me at Fumie's friend's\nwedding on Saturday. (Fumie's friend, Machiko or Ma-chan for short, is\nfeatured in my previous\npost<\/a>.)\n\n<\/p>

\n\nBecause the wedding was for Fumie's friend, and she'd have various tasks\nthroughout the day, I was on<\/span> Anthony duty, so I left<\/span> my semi-pro SLR<\/a> at home.\nStill, I couldn't<\/span> resist bringing something, so I pocketed<\/span> a small Canon\npoint-n-shoot<\/a>. It can take<\/span> some nice photos if there's enough light,\nbut there's nothing about a wedding<\/span> or reception that has enough light, so\nall the pictures came out horrible. The few I<\/span>'m showing in this post have\nundergone heavy<\/i> post processing, including treatment with Noise Ninja<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

<\/a>Bride being given away by her father<\/big><\/div>\n\n

The wedding was between Fumie's friend Machiko and her fianceé\nMasaya, and was held at the Hotel Okura in Kobe, Japan. It consisted<\/span> of a\n10<\/span>-minute ceremony in the hotel chapel (bride given away by her father,\nexchange of rings, signing some documents) followed by a reception<\/span>\nelsewhere in the hotel.<\/p>\n\n

Despite some initial apprehension, Anthony performed his ring-boy duties\nperfectly. Perhaps he remembered from having done in four months ago at his uncle's wedding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The budding photographer in me can't help but to criticize the hotel on\nthe lighting in their chapel. They do a brisk<\/span> business in weddings (there\nwere 11 other weddings on Saturday) so they should know<\/i> that a mix<\/span>\nof fluorescent and incandescent lighting makes for very difficult color balance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

After the wedding was the reception, which is not a place<\/span> you want to\nbring a four<\/span>-year-old because it's deathly boring for them. Boring means\nfussy. But Fumie<\/span> planned well and brought the toys that would keep Anthony\noccupied, and so he was wonderful<\/i> the whole day.<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>\nHigh-school friends of the bride: Fumie, Uma-chan, and\nKei-chan<\/big> Kei-chan was with Fumie on the night Fumie and I met.<\/span> She got married<\/span> herself earlier this year.<\/div>\n\n

They had a very nice little slide show showing the couple as kids,\ngrowing up, and then as a dating<\/span> pair. It included<\/span> the following picture of\nthe bride and the three ladies shown in the picture above, at age 16.<\/p>\n\n

It was a very long day for Anthony, but even late, he was filled with\nenergy. This is how he killed some time after the reception, as Fumie chats\nwith the mother of the bride, and Uma-chan, Kei-chan, and Kei-chan's\nhusband look on...<\/p>\n\n

That last picture (lower-right) is of an event common at Japanese\nwedding receptions: the couple light a candle<\/span> on each table. The house<\/span> lights were dim and the couple was awash in a brilliant<\/span> spotlight as they\nmoved from table to table. (The bright light accounts for that picture\nhaving the best quality of any of them.) It was dramatic; Anthony joined\neveryone in clapping.<\/p>\n\n

The high-school friends ended up being the last ones remaining after\neveryone else had gone home, so we got a bonus<\/span> group shot. I handed<\/span> my tiny\nCanon point-n-shoot camera to the pro cameraman (who had at least $13,000\nworth of Canon professional equipment around his own neck) and he took this\nshot for me:<\/p>\n\n

The groom was still quite nervous when that picture was taken, but\neventually relaxed a bit.<\/span> We all went<\/span> up to a rooftop<\/span> garden and got a\nwonderful<\/span> view of the port of Kobe. It was all<\/span> quite nice.<\/p>\n\n

One other comment about that last picture: I'm not wearing shoes. We'd driven<\/span> down from Kyoto with our nice clothes in the trunk, but it turns out\nthat I'd forgotten my shoes. Oops. There's no way I'd ever find my size\n(Japanese size 32, for the record), so I had<\/span> to wing it. There was a\ndepartment<\/span> store nearby, so I ran<\/span> over and bought a pair<\/span> of black household\nslippers. That's what you see there.<\/p>\n\n

At least it's not as bad as when I went<\/span> to India for my best friend's\nwedding. I'd talked<\/span> to his father before going to ask about what to wear,\nand he told me quite strongly that it would be brutally hot, and that I\nshould<\/span> wear shorts. So I did<\/span>. And I ended<\/span> up being horribly underdressed. I should<\/span> have asked his mom, not his dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
