The first time I rode a bicycle from Kyoto to Osaka, a year<\/span> and a half<\/span> ago (“<\/span>Cycling Along the River from Kyoto To Osaka Castle<\/a>”<\/span>), the 55-kilometer (34-mile)\nroute we were lead on followed roads and paths that traced the eastern bank of the Katsura River and then the southern bank of the\nYodo River. For the most<\/span> part it's a fine<\/span> route, on nice paths closed to motor vehicles.<\/p>\n\n

The initial paths out of Kyoto are the least developed part of the trip, so I came<\/span> up with\na less<\/span> muddy, less bumpy exit from Kyoto<\/a>, but otherwise I'd take the same route every time I went<\/span> to or from Osaka\n(including rides blogged about\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

I got to wondering why we always used only the one side of the river and not the other, and so while I was<\/span> stuck at home sick over the\nNew Year break, I spent<\/span> days inspecting data (satellite photos, Strava ride data, etc.) to figure out what roads and paths\nwere on the other side of the river, and updated OpenStreetMaps accordingly. It looked<\/span> very promising.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, on Jan 7th, I put it to use and gave it a try,<\/span> resulting in a 101<\/span>-mile ride down one side of the river and up the other\n(view at Strava<\/a>),\nwith various excursions in Osaka, including an all-out assault of the notorious Tenpozan<\/i> (Mt. Tenpo) climb.<\/p>\n\n
