Last week I took a drive out to a new<\/span> temple that Manseki had recommended as being pretty in autumn.\nIt did not<\/span> disappoint. (The “<\/span>Anatomy of a Selfie<\/span><\/a>”<\/span> that I posted<\/span> the other day was taken here.)<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that I rode right by this temple during my summer bicycle ride to\nNagoya<\/a>. At that time<\/span>, it took about 2h 40m to get here from home. This time by car, it took about an hour. I made the<\/span> drive\nwith Paul, Damien, and a newly<\/span>-met friend, Adrian Tischler<\/a> from Australia. <\/p>\n\n

We didn't realize it at the time, but the directions we followed to get there brought us to a\nlittle<\/span>-used back entrance. There was little traffic as we approached in the morning, but we passed a\ngauntlet<\/span> of parking-lot folks trying to get us to patronize their business. The sheer<\/span> number of them waiting for the crowds\nto arrive didn't bode well for a quiet<\/span> visit, but it was still early.<\/p>\n\n

Our route<\/span> left that\nbehind, and eventually we came across a bridge<\/span> that offered a nice<\/span> view.<\/p>\n\n\n

Soon we found a parking area at what looked like the end of the road, so we parked and walked up a pretty<\/span>\nservice road toward the temple...<\/p>\n\n

At the crest of the hill you pay your entrance fee (about 500 yen), then descend into the temple area proper...<\/p>\n\n\n

Halfway down, there's a picturesque alcove, a place<\/span> called a chasenzuka<\/i> (\u8336\u7b45\u585a\uff0f<\/span>\u3061\u3083\u305b\u3093\u3065\u304b),\nwith a huge<\/span> stone carved with that word (\u8336\u7b45\u585a)...<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It's apparently a place where practitioners of the Japanese Tea Ceremony can ceremoniously burn their used tea whisks,\nwhich are made from bamboo and don't last all that long. I guess<\/span> if you've\nspent $100 on a whisk<\/span><\/a>, you want to say goodbye.<\/p>\n\n

I knew that a normal photo wouldn't capture the feeling of the space, so I tried<\/span> making\na wigglegram<\/span><\/a> for the first time in ages...<\/p>\n\n\n
