This post is a longer version of Friday's “<\/span>Checking On the Carpet\nof Yellow at the Ochiba Shrine<\/a>”<\/span>, in which I posted<\/span> two quick photos from a ride<\/span> that day to check out the colors at the Iwato\nOchiba Shrine (\u5ca9\u6238\u843d\u8449\u795e\u793e)<\/span> in the mountains northwest of Kyoto. I started<\/span> writing this followup post the next day, but have been\nso busy since I'm only finishing it today.\n<\/p>\n\n

I normally like long rides, I guess to amortize the once-per-ride overhead of dealing with everything (the before and after\nof clothes, bike, electronics, data, and self), but I didn't<\/span> get started until after noon, so I just<\/span> thought to pop up to see\nhow the Ochiba Shrine was doing fall-foliage wise.<\/p>\n\n

Along the way up the first climb into the mountains, where there's little traffic, I was surprised<\/span> to find\nManseki coming the other way. He had just<\/span> visited the same shrine with his wife.<\/p>\n\n

I then continued on toward the shrine, and went a bit<\/span> past to check out a little<\/span> garden I know<\/span> to be nearby...<\/p>\n\n

The point is the yellow in the center background. It's washed<\/span> out in the sunlight in this photo,\nand I guess<\/span> the scale is hard to grasp, but the yellow ginkgo trees are towering. They're from where\nthe “<\/span>Fallen-Leaf Shrine”<\/span> gets its name.<\/p>\n\n

I noticed for the first time that the green hedge next to the shrine was partially yellow,\nright below where some of the ginkgo branches had dipped down to touch it. It's as if<\/span> the\nyellow was contagious to the shrub:<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that the yellow section of hedge is actually a different<\/span> kind of plant\n(the leaves look like some kind of mini maple to me, but I dunno<\/span> whether such a thing<\/span>\neven exists)...<\/p>\n\n

I took the opportunity to ride a dead<\/span>-end road that starts near the shrine, diving up into the mountain to a small<\/span> village,\nbut otherwise leading nowhere.<\/p>\n\n

It was a pleasant ride on a wonderful day, and I stopped<\/span> often for photos.<\/p>\n\n

After exploring all the nooks and crannies the dead-end road beyond the shrine had to offer, I headed<\/span> home via the\nTakao area of Kyoto, which has some very nice temples,\nthe most famous of which is Jingoji, which appeared on my blog here<\/a>,\nand Kosanji (often incorrectly referred to as “<\/span>Kozanji”<\/span>), which appeared here<\/a>.\nAnyway, even the drive through on National Route 162 is pretty, and that's all I saw<\/span> this time through...<\/p>\n\n

Finally I did the a little<\/span> side climb<\/a>\nto a hilltop<\/span> cemetery. It's short — just half a mile<\/span> (600m) — but it averages 15% and\nthe final 110m is 23~25%.<\/p>\n\n

I felt a bit odd showing up in cycling gear, but it was fine and so where the photos.<\/p>\n\n
