I traveled again yesterday from Japan to Ohio (Kyoto \u2192 Osaka \u2192 Tokyo \u2192 Chicago \u2192 Cleveland \u2192 Rootstown)\nto spend some time with my folks, especially since my mom had a stroke<\/span> earlier in the year. I wanted<\/span> Anthony to\nsee the property I grew<\/span> on one more time, so he came along for this trip.<\/p>\n\n

I don't like having to pop up to Tokyo for the transpacific flight, but that hour-long flight from Osaka to Tokyo always holds\nthe promise of a nice<\/span> Mt. Fuji view, so that's something to look forward to. Mt. Fuji isn't quite so pretty during the summer,\nas without the cone it's just a big<\/span> dark cinder cone (This bland shot<\/a> with snow is\nnot looking so bad now.), but Mt. Fuji is Mt. Fuji.<\/p>\n\n

Our flight from Chicago to Cleveland was on United Airlines, and one of the flight attendants had\nthe most amazing smile permanently affixed to his face. Whether standing back to observe while people\nboarded, or while helping people board, or while doing the safety presentation, or while passing out\ndrinks and snacks, this smile just radiated at 11 the whole time.<\/p>\n\n

I sat at the back of the plane, so I could<\/span> watch for a long<\/span> while as he passed out a packet<\/span> of snacks and a napkin<\/span> to each\npassenger, working his way forward. Each time he passed something out, the smile made you feel that it was the highlight of his\nday. It was really<\/span> quite amazing to watch.<\/p>\n\n

The whole time I watched, the smile wavered only twice, each time suddenly blooming into an even more dazzling display, though\none touched with a hint<\/span> of embarrassment; I could<\/span> tell that he must have just been complimented on his smile.<\/p>\n\n

It really brought a lovely glow to the short flight, one that I appreciated<\/span> all the more in my jet-lagged zombie state, though\nit made me wonder why I can't<\/span> manage that kind of smile for even the 1\/60th of a second<\/span> for a photo.<\/span> Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

Once we pulled up to the gate, I knew<\/span> it would take a while<\/span> before people would clear out enough for me to actually exit, so\nwhat the heck, I went to<\/span> the back galley to ask him for a portrait.<\/span> I mentioned<\/span> that he must get complimented on his smile all the\ntime, and he got this “<\/span>well, actually...”<\/span> look on his face and said that he didn't, but had been complimented twice on this\nflight. I smiled<\/span> to myself and thought “<\/span>called it!”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

He kindly agreed to a portrait, and I spent<\/span> a few<\/span> seconds trying to take it as he stood, but the back galley of a 737<\/span> isn't the\nbest place for a portrait<\/span> and the lighting was really bad. I didn't<\/span> want to take any more of his time than I already<\/span> was, so I\nquickly<\/span> adjusted his position to one side of the galley where the light was a bit<\/span> smoother, and a few<\/span> seconds later I had<\/span> the\nphoto above.<\/p>\n\n

I took the time to get his employee number so that I could<\/span> pass along this sentiment to United directly, and his email so that\nI could<\/span> send a copy<\/span> of the photo, and by then the ground crew were coming in the back entrance, so I left<\/span> him to his work.<\/p>\n\n

Dad picked us up at the airport, and we stopped by to see Mom, who was looking great. Jetlag shooed us home quickly,\nthough, and we both slept through the night pretty well.<\/p>\n\n

In the morning I took Anthony up to where I went<\/span> to high school to borrow the soccer goals...<\/p>\n\n\n

Anthony asked whether they had these goals here when I went<\/span> to school, and I had<\/span> to answer truthfully that I had<\/span> no idea... I never<\/span> paid attention to soccer or any sport when I was<\/span> in school.
