Norikura's eastern approach, <span class='nobr'>a path<\/span>\nthat rises 1,461m (4,793') from where <span class='nobr'>I stayed<\/span> (the cycling-friendly <a\nhref='http:\/\/www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp\/norikura\/'>Pension Norikura<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p style='font-size:120%'>Day 1<\/p>\n\n<p>The first day I rode by myself, and though the ride wasn't the toughest of the three on paper (it was <span\nclass='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>only<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> 105km\/65mi with 2,923m\/9,590' of elevation gain), it took the most\nout of me.<\/p>\n\n<iframe class='ic' height='405' width='590' frameborder='0' allowtransparency='true' scrolling='no' src='https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/638029127\/embed\/15306515a150af70c978cff1284eb2cae0a1a885'><\/iframe>\n\n<p>At the start of the ride, I descended from the hotel down to where the road begins, then turned around and did <a\nhref='https:\/\/www.strava.com\/segments\/12598028'>the entire road up<\/a>, which gave me 1,717m (5,633') of ascent in <span\nclass='nobr'>a single<\/span> shot of unbroken climb, <span class='nobr'>a statistic<\/span>  that tickles\n<span class='nobr'>a certain<\/span> something in the cycling\/data geek in me.<\/p>\n\n<p> I brought my Nikon D4 and a couple of lenses (<span class='nobr'>Nikkor 24<\/span>-70\/2.8 and <a\nhref='\/blog\/2006-11-06\/275'>the big 70-200\/2.8<\/a>), which together weigh more than half as much as my bike. <span class='nobr'>But I took<\/span>\nit slow and paused often for photos, so frankly the initial big climb wasn't all that difficult. What was tough was the\naccumulation of what came after in the ride, <span class='nobr'>I guess.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-top:60px; font-size:120%'>Day 2<\/p>\n\n<p>The second day I rode with a group that included friends old and new. Norikura.
