Anthony turned four today.<\/p>\n\n

Due to a fluke with Fumie's schedule, I made his<\/span> bento<\/a> this morning,\nfollowing simple but detailed instructions that Fumie had left. The result<\/span> wasn't pretty, but I judged<\/span> that it probably wouldn't kill him.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie and I both picked him up from preschool, and on the walk back to\nthe car I asked<\/span> how the bento was. His understated<\/span> reply was “It\nwas okay; I didn't<\/span> throw up.<\/b>” (He used the Japanese ge<\/i>\nfor “throw up”)<\/p>\n\n

Now, there are a few things you should know about this: we ask how the\nbento was every day, and his answer is usually something enthusiastic along\nthe lines of “it was tasty<\/i><\/b>,” so the lukewarm\n“it was okay” is a reflection<\/span> on my bento-making skills.\nHowever, the comment about throwing up is not a back<\/span>-handed compliment\nabout my bento skills, but a reference<\/span> to last Friday when he come down\nwith some kind of stomach ailment and spent most of the day throwing up. He was fine<\/span> today.<\/p>\n\n

After picking him up, we headed for a toy<\/span> store to let him pick out his\nown present. After searching for a while,<\/span> he picked out a big<\/span> garbage truck\nand hauled it to the register.<\/p>\n\n

In choosing this garbage truck, he passed up big fire trucks, large\nairport parking structures, helicopters, and other things that little boys\ngenerally go for. But the choice<\/span> of a garbage<\/span> truck is not that surprising\nconsidering his track record\nfor choosing his own toy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

After hauling it home, he was a bit<\/span> pooped<\/div>\n\n
But somehow opening it brought back his energy<\/div>\n\n
He played for hours<\/div>\n\n

When we lived in Cupertino, the trash company was Los Altos Garbage, so that's what I see<\/span> when I see<\/span> the “Lotos” on the side of the truck.<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>He'd been looking forward to the cake for a very<\/span> long time<\/div>\n\n
<\/a>Fumie taught him about making a wish<\/span> before blowing out the candles<\/div>\n\n

He wanted to eat directly from the cake. We certainly<\/span> wouldn't normally\nallow that, but it's his birthday, so why not?<\/p>\n\n

It was a long day for him, and I have<\/span> a cold<\/span> (that I probably<\/span> got from\nhim), so we'll open other presents tomorrow. His Aunt Natalie and Uncle\nAlan<\/a> sent a package<\/span> that we're really looking forward to. (We haven't\ntold him yet, since he'd never be able to wait.)<\/p>\n\n

One other thing to mention is that yesterday he called me\n “\u304a\u7236\u3055\u3093”\n\n(otousan<\/i> - dad) for the first time. For the most<\/span> part, he calls me\nthe English-only “Daddy” whether he's speaking English or\nJapanese, and sometimes “Papa,” which works fine in either\nlanguage. Most Japanese kids his age use “papa” or\n“otousan,” eventually using only the latter as they get older,\nbut for whatever reason he'd never used otousan<\/i> with me. We were making<\/span> pancakes and I'd given him the eggs and milk to mix, and he said\n“\u306d\u3001\u306d\u3001\u304a\u7236\u3055\u3093\u3001\u3053\u308c\u3067\u3044\u3044\uff1f” (“Hey Dad, is this\nokay?”)\n\n<\/p>
