When setting up <span\nclass='nobr'>a machine<\/span> for Lightroom use, one wants to know what kinds of upgrades will be most effective, and along these\nlines <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> an email from James Palik, <span class='nobr'>a professional<\/span> photographer who also\nteaches processing and workflow with Lightroom, asking specific questions about Lightroom resource management.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sadly I'm not the right person to ask about this kind of stuff, but luckily <span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a contact<\/span> within Adobe who is. I've\nreceived permission to reproduce the questions and answers here so that all my benefit.<\/p>\n\n<p>The current version of Lightroom is 6.3 (LrCC 2015.3).<\/p>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\n table.q2664 { margin-top:30px}\n table.q2664 tr { vertical-align: baseline }\n table.q2664 tr:first-child td { font-weight:bold }\n\n<\/style>\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>How much installed memory will Lightroom address. For example, is there any\nvalue to installing <span class='nobr'>a full<\/span> 64 GB on <span class='nobr'>a Windows<\/span> machine.\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\n\nLightroom 6 runs as a native 64-bit application. In theory, the\nimage processing engine can use up to 50% of the total RAM on your system\nto backup its internal virtual memory system. Typically, processing <span class='nobr'>a\nsingle<\/span> photo would not require 32GB of RAM. Current Lightroom\nheuristics set <span class='nobr'>a maximum<\/span> limit on the number of negatives cached in RAM\nat any given time (last 3 or 4 negatives loaded). <span class='nobr'>So having<\/span> more RAM\nadding to the machine would not be helpful.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, if you could use the\nadditional RAM to setup as RAM disk. That would be immensely helpful to\nspeedup the previously loaded negatives. This is the same reasoning why\nhaving the catalog and negatives (Smart Previews) on <span class='nobr'>a fast<\/span> SSD drive is\nvery helpful.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the normal case, I would currently recommend 16GB of RAM.\n\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>Lightroom determines <span class='nobr'>a set<\/span> amount of Cache when it is installed. <span class='nobr'>How does Lightroom<\/span> determine this setting?\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\n\nI assume by <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Cache<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> you meant the camera raw cache? <span class='nobr'>It depends<\/span> on\nyour workflow. <span class='nobr'>If you are<\/span> following <span class='nobr'>a DNG<\/span>-only workflow with <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Fast Load\nData<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> embedded, the camera raw cache rarely comes into play. <span class='nobr'>If you process<\/span> the raw files (CR2, NEF, RAF) only, then  having <span class='nobr'>a bigger<\/span> camera\nraw cache is very helpful. <span class='nobr'>It depends<\/span> on the number of photos that you\nwould need to process through each time and how often that you need to go\nback and reprocess them. Having the camera raw cache directory on <span class='nobr'>a faster<\/span>\ndrive is very beneficial.\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>When does Lightroom start to use Cache. (in what part of the\n   development process)\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\n\nEvery time that Lightroom would need to render the negatives with\nthe adjustment settings, in the develop module or the quick develop in the\nlibrary module.\n\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>\n\nWhen it comes to CPUs and cores, what is your best advice for purchasing the most powerful\n   standalone machine when it is going to be used almost exclusively\n   for photography processing in Lightroom?\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\n\nLightroom likes multiple processors\/mult-cores and make uses of\nthem.\n\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>Will Lightroom take advantage of dual processors?\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\n\nYes.\n\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n<table class='q2664'><tr><td>Q:<\/td><td>How many cores will Lightroom take advantage of?\n\n<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A:<\/td><td><p>\nSince Lr 6.2, Lightroom will make use of all cores available.<\/p>\n\n<p>In\nall Lightroom versions, you can check the Lightroom's System Info dialog\ninvoked from the Help menu. <span class='nobr'>It has a<\/span> field named <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>Maximum thread count\nused by Camera Raw<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> that tells how many cores that Lightroom will be using.\n\n<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n<hr width='20%' align='left'\/>\n\n\n<p>There we have it.
