I've been meaning to write about a nice<\/span> little solo ride I had<\/span> two weeks ago, to the Ochiba Jinja shrine. It's the same<\/span> place that I wrote<\/span> about in\n“<\/span>Great Day in Kyoto\u2019s Colorful Northern Mountains<\/a>”<\/span>,\nwhich actually happened the next day.<\/p>\n\n

The fall colors had been pretty subdued, but with my health back after six weeks of colds\/allergy\/something,\neverything looked beautiful to me.<\/p>\n\n

The small sign pointed up what looked like a driveway,<\/span> but turned out to be an old logging road. I probably<\/span> shouldn't have taken it on my road bike<\/a>,\nbut I tend<\/span> to throw that kind of caution to the wind and just do it, so I just<\/span> did it.<\/p>\n\n

At first is was very rough\/broken pavement, but then it smoothed out...<\/p>\n\n

It was about 1.4km at 9.5% of increasingly rough road, mostly gravel of some sort. It'd be great<\/span> on a mountain<\/span> bike or even my\nTrek cross bike, but it was no place for a road<\/span> bike with dainty tires.<\/p>\n\n

Returning the way I came, I had to go very slowly due to the combination of rough road and steepness, and found that\nmy wrists hurt a lot.<\/span> After a while<\/span> I couldn't<\/span> stand it, and intended to stop to rest my wrists and almost fell over because\nI suddenly<\/span> couldn't unclip my foot from the pedal! (You'll recall that I had<\/span>\na lot<\/span> of trepidation<\/a> about riding clipped in,\nbut that I also<\/span> quickly got used to it<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n

Luckily I was able to switch my weight over and unclip with the other side. I soon realized<\/span>\nthe source of my problem:<\/p>\n\n

I had somehow lost two of the three bolts that hold the clips to the shoe! This allowed the clip to swivel,\nmaking it impossible to unclip without dislocating my knee or dismounting. I was in<\/span> a bit<\/span> of a pickle<\/span>\nuntil I got<\/span> the idea of moving one of the three bolts over from the other shoe. Luckily I had<\/span>\na multifunction<\/span> tool<\/a> with an appropriate hex wrench.<\/p>\n\n

I then continued down almost back to the main road, until I stopped<\/span> here:<\/p>\n\n

Having faced much worse<\/a> with my first flat, I put what<\/span> I learned<\/span>\nin its aftermath to good use, shoving a thick<\/span> foil cookie wrapper between the new tube and the split in the tire, to stop\nthe tube from squeezing out and bursting.<\/p>\n\n

With the tire patched up well enough, I continued<\/span> my ride. I had a<\/span> second spare tube and a patch<\/span> kit I could<\/span> still use on the\nfirst tube, should I need<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

I was in an exploring mood, so took the time to stop on a bridge<\/span> I often<\/span> go over for a photo<\/span> looking down...<\/p>\n\n

I took the side road for quite a while,<\/span> until it got sufficiently bumpy to have me worry about the tire, so I left<\/span> the full\nexploration of it for another day.<\/p>\n\n

Then I continued north for another 10 minutes and I was<\/span> at the Ochiba Jinja shrine...<\/p>\n\n

I headed back home amidst the autumn late-afternoon light. The view over<\/span> the Kamo River back close to home was crisk:<\/p>\n\n
