After posting\n“<\/span>Trepidation and Anticipation: Moving Up to Cycling Shoes<\/a>”<\/span>\nyesterday, I put the<\/span> pedals on my bike and today I went<\/span> out for a short<\/span>\ntest ride with them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It was much easier than I had feared.<\/p>\n\n

After putting the pedals on yesterday, I tried<\/span> mounting the bike\nstationary in my house, and I had<\/span> a lot<\/span> of difficulty unclipping the shoes\nfrom the pedals, so my fear of falling over went way up. But then it\nwas suggested<\/a> that perhaps the bolts weren't tight enough, and indeed\nthat was the problem. Once I tightented<\/span> things properly, it was easy to\nclip out. Thanks Jason.<\/p>\n\n

Still, with thoughts of slowly toppling over sideways on my mind, I\ndressed<\/span> “<\/span>appropriately”<\/span>, which in this case means comically. I put some<\/span>\npadded braces over my knees and then jeans, and wore padded winter gloves. Not quite<\/span> the Michelin Man, but close enough. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

I rode near home just to get a feel for them, stopping a number<\/span> of times to readjust\nthe cleats. Once that was done, I felt comfortable<\/span> clipping in and out, so moved on for a little<\/span> ride.<\/p>\n\n

One of the first things I did was a\nlittle<\/span> 50m (150') climb<\/a>, just to get the feeling for the pedals on a\nslope,<\/span> both in and out of the saddle. I put a<\/span> bit of effort into it, but\nnot too much. I could<\/span> certainly tell it had been a month<\/span> since I'd been on\nthe bike. Still, it turns out that I missed<\/span> my PR by just three seconds, so that\nbodes well.<\/p>\n\n

I did a couple of other small climbs at a more<\/span> relaxed pace,\nthen one final climb where I stopped<\/span> and restarted over and over again,\ninching my way up. I got pretty<\/span> good at clipping in quickly and without looking,\nso that also bodes well.<\/p>\n\n

So, one day down without falling over. Good day. We'll see what tomorrow brings.<\/p>\n\n
