I played a bit of ping-pong today with a family<\/span> friend, 91-year-old Vernon Weingart. I almost<\/i> didn't lose.<\/p>\n\n

He is the personification of “<\/span>kindly grandfather type”<\/span>, who walks slowly\nand with purpose, always has a kind<\/span> word and an easy smile.<\/p>\n\n

We all knocked the ball around for a while,<\/span> then as we were about to leave,\nhe suggested an actual game.<\/span> A real game<\/span> with Anthony wouldn't have been fun\n(Anthony would have been utterly crushed), but I offered<\/span> some hope that\nhe'd have to at least keep one eye open.<\/p>\n\n

We decided on the best two out of three...<\/p>\n\n

And suddenly his demeanor completely changed. Gone was the kindly smile,\nreplaced by eyes with laser focus and determination. Take no prisoners.\nIt was a<\/span> shocking transformation, but in\nretrospect it's unsurprising, given his competitive achievements.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not great at ping-pong, but I'm not bad either. I can inflict<\/span> some\nwicked unpredictable spins, and at times can smash with thunderous power,\neven from behind and below the table.<\/p>\n\n

I won the first game after going to deuce.<\/p>\n\n

He won the next two. Both games were close... I suspect<\/span> that's how he crafted it, to keep\nit interesting. He aced me<\/span> on his serve only once.<\/p>\n\n

We ended<\/span> with a firm<\/span>\n“<\/span>good game”<\/span>\nhandshake, and a promise<\/span> that I'll give him a better<\/span> game next time.<\/p>\n\n

But in my defense, he's not really<\/i> 91 years old yet... his birthday is tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n
