<\/a>\nKyoto's “<\/span>Heart Loop”<\/span> Cycling Route<\/span>\nFrom my house it's 55km with 800m of vertical climb (34mi \/ 2,600')\n<\/div>\n\n

Yesterday I finally did the “<\/span>Heart Loop”<\/span> route that seems to be a local<\/span>\nfavorite. It goes over<\/span> three not-very-big passes, which in the\ncounter-clockwise order that I did<\/span> it yesterday are Ebumi (\u6c5f\u6587\u5ce0),<\/span>\nMochikoshi \uff08\u6301\u8d8a\u5ce0),<\/span> and Kyomi (\u4eac\u898b\u5ce0).<\/span> Total elevation gain is only 800m\n(2,600'), so it's not very challenging unless you choose to make it so by\nreally pushing.<\/p>\n\n

My previous few rides have been in the rain, and so my camera lens got a\nlayer<\/span> of something on it that I neglected<\/span> to clean off, and so the photos\nare all hazy and indistinct. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n\n

The lens aside, it was a nice ride with nice folks: Manseki (Japan), Ross (Canada), Michael (USA), and meeting for the first time, Iago (Spain).<\/p>\n\n

We met near Sanjo Starbucks as usual, and got moving at 7:42am.<\/p>\n\n

I snapped the photo above to record the license plate of the car in case trouble arose from his dangerous driving. Our speed<\/span> was limited by the mini pickup truck in front of us, so we had no trouble keeping pace with traffic\nand were not slowing him down in the least, but I sensed<\/span> that he took it as an affront that bicycles were in front\nof him, so he tailgated for a long<\/span> while before just deciding to push forward despite there being nowhere to go. He endangered<\/span> all of us for precisely zero gain.<\/p>\n\n

Half a minute later, he turned toward the city and we turned onto a small<\/span> road farther into the mountains as we started\nup the left-side “<\/span>lobe”<\/span> of the heart.<\/p>\n\n

This part of the course leads 6.8km (4.2mi) to the start of the next\nclimb. The route<\/span> is mostly rising, but overall there's only 190m (620') of\nelevation gain, so it's not challenging if you don't push. Ross and Iago\nwere idly chatting as they lazily road together most of the way, but their\n“<\/span>lazily”<\/span> pretty much perfectly matched my “<\/span>pushing fairly hard”<\/span>, so they\nwere in sight most of the time.<\/p>\n\n

When I took these photos of Iago acting silly for the camera, it was on\na fairly<\/span> steep uphill section, but he just kept pumping away.<\/p>\n\n\n

The next climb, to Mochikoshi Pass, is a bit<\/span> intense. It's just 1<\/span>.05km (0.65mi) long,\nbut it rises 108m (354'), making for an average slope of 10.3%. I'd descended<\/span> it before, but this\nwas my first time to climb it.<\/p>\n\n

It took me 6:27<\/a>. Iago\ntook only 4:54. Ross has done it faster, but took his sweet time today with\na relaxing<\/span> 5:18. Michael and Manseki apparently chatted the whole time, so\ntook it much easier.<\/p>\n\n

I'm still trying to get used to the Panasonic LX100<\/a> that I bought<\/span> for cycling. The lag between<\/span> pressing the shutter button and the photo actually being taken bites me sometimes. I think<\/span> that has something to do with\nwhy the photo above is not panned well (I think<\/span> I stopped<\/span> panning once I thought<\/span> the picture was taken). I was going<\/span> for\nsomething like this<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I did better a few moments later when Iago was playing around...<\/p>\n\n

On the way back we crested Kyomi Pass from the north. I was happy<\/span> to make a PR<\/span> (personal record)<\/a>,\nbesting the PR I'd set last Wednesday, shaving 11 seconds off to 12:18.<\/p>\n\n

The route home brought me across the bottom of the Kyoto Imperial Palace Park, and I was<\/span> booking it with\nan average speed of 40kph (25mph). It turns<\/span> out that this puts me as the\nsixth faster person<\/a> to register this segment with Strava. I've held the sixth-place ranking on a segment<\/span> before, but this is the first time\nit's been for a segment<\/span> with more than six registered riders. In this case<\/span> I'm sixth out of “<\/span>1,390 attempts by 265 people”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

I think I've got it in me to shave a few<\/span> more seconds off. We'll see.<\/p>\n\n

All in all it was a very nice little ride. I got to<\/span> meet Iago, and of course I always<\/span> enjoy riding with good folks like Ross, Manseki, and Michael. I was back<\/span> home by noon to get started on work for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
