After so many cycling-related posts lately, it's time I get<\/span> back to my basics with some pretty photos.<\/p>\n\n

I've been meaning to write about the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple (\u611b\u5b95\u5ff5\u4ecf\u5bfa)<\/span>\ntemple for years, and indeed all the photos on this post are from 2012\n(from visits to the temple in April and December of that year). A few of<\/span>\nthe photos appeared a year<\/span> ago in “<\/span>A Few<\/span> Desktop Backgrounds\nfrom the Delightfully Whimsical Otaginenbutsuji Temple<\/a>”<\/span>, and one\nappears as the subject of my Photo-Development\nChallenge #2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It's at the far north end of the Arashiyama area that is already filled with more temples and shrines than someone could\nsee in a week,<\/span> and it's sort of a hidden<\/span> treasure, so it's not particularly crowded. Tourists who walk what they think is the\nfull length of Arashiyama probably stop here<\/a> because it simply looks\nlike there's nothing beyond. But only a<\/span> short distance farther is an amazing place.<\/p>\n\n

The temple is most noted for its 1,200 often-whimsical statues carved from stone.<\/p>\n\n

Sometimes they're scattered about haphazardly like those on Easter Island...<\/p>\n\n\n

Each has its individual charm (and I believe<\/span> each was carved by a\ndifferent<\/span> person), so there are always more fun things to notice each time\nyou visit, or even each time you look at their photos. I just noticed<\/span> that\nthe subject of the aforementioned photo\nchallenge<\/a> can be found in the shot above.<\/p>\n\n

The visit in December 2012 with Damien was at the end of a photographically<\/span>-productive day\nthat yielded a lovely<\/span> rainbow<\/a>,\nsome stunning fall colors<\/a>,\nautumn views of the Jojuji Temple<\/a>,\nand assorted other beauty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
