On Wednesday Gorm<\/a> and I did<\/span> a 140km<\/span> (88 mile)\ncycling ride to Miyama<\/a>. It had 2<\/span>,350m (7,800') of vertical climb, and\nthough just a few<\/span> days prior I had<\/span> done a much<\/span> tougher ride<\/a>,\nthis is the one that wiped me out.<\/p>\n\n

Our route took us over a road that I'd not been on since this trip six years ago<\/a>. It was my<\/span> first time by bike, and though the climb was long, it wasn't\nparticularly steep. Going down afterwards is always nice...<\/p>\n\n\n

At Gorm's suggestion, I rode up it so that I could<\/span> create a segment<\/span> on Strava for it,\nwhich I dubbed<\/span> Miyama Mini “<\/span>Nasty”<\/span><\/a>\nin reference to the “<\/span>Nasty”<\/span> 21% slope shown here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

This segment is steeper, but much shorter.... way too short to be a\npractically<\/span>-usable segment, but if someone's got an accurate 1Hz GPS unit,\nthey can have some fun trying to register a fast<\/span> time.<\/p>\n\n

The road surface of the slope is white concrete, which stands out\nagainst the black asphalt of the road leading to and from the slope, so I\nmade<\/span> the white concrete section the limits of the segment boundaries. This\nextends the length of the segment to include a flat<\/span> area at the top, so the\noverall average slope goes down to 20% (10.8m rise over 55m length), but\nthe main part of the slope is much steeper.<\/p>\n\n

I did it twice (once in 19 seconds, then again in 23 seconds), but\nStrava noticed only one attempt and credited me with 17 seconds for some\nreason. Anyway, that was a bit<\/span> of fun.<\/p>\n\n

The most difficult parts of the ride remained, and I was<\/span> mentally not\nlooking forward to them because I'd done them in reverse before (here<\/a>) and if I've seen a\nmountain<\/span> road only as a downhill<\/span> slope, then I find<\/span> it really rough to\nthink about doing it uphill. It feels<\/span> counter-intuitive, but these roads\n“<\/span>feel”<\/span> much longer to me going down than going up.<\/p>\n\n

Once I've done it uphill then I have<\/span> a different<\/span> kind of apprehension as\nI approach<\/span> it next time, but for today I'd have to do for the first time\nSasari Pass from the west, and Hanase Pass from the north, and I was<\/span>\ndreading it.<\/p>\n\n

So I put the camera away and just did them, slowly.<\/p>\n\n

At least the last bit of the last climb was a repeat<\/span> of the return from Cowbell<\/a>, and\nI made<\/span> a new<\/span> PR on that\nsegment<\/a> by a few<\/span> seconds, so that was nice.<\/p>\n\n

I was really wiped out. After the 230km ride around Lake\nBiwa<\/a> last week I felt<\/span> great, and last weekend I felt<\/span> just fine after a\n115km ride with\na personal<\/span>-best 2,660m (8,750') of climb<\/a>, but this ride today wiped me out.<\/p>\n\n
