When I started<\/span> cycling<\/a> earlier\nin the year, I brought<\/span> along my big Nikon D4, carried slung across my back\nlike this<\/a> so\nthat I'd have it ready to shoot when I wanted<\/span> (like this<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

It's a heavy camera to carry, especially on steep uphill mountain rides,\nbut I like<\/span> the quality of photograph that it allows me to get. I don't<\/span> think I'd\nbe able to get these kinds of shots<\/a>\nwith a smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

But the D4 is big, so for some of the more mountainous rides like this<\/a>, I reverted<\/span> back to my older, lighter Nikon D700.<\/p>\n\n

Still, I hoped for something a lot lighter without sacrificing too much\nimage quality, and after some mild searching, decided to give a Panasonic<\/span>\nLX100 a try.<\/span> Among other reviews, the review\nat DP Review<\/a> was glowing, and this camera won out on its “<\/span>Enthusiast\nCompact Camera Roundup<\/a>”<\/span>, which looks at “<\/span>compactish”<\/span> cameras from the\npoint of view of someone used to a high<\/span>-end SLR.<\/p>\n\n

In the\nconclusion<\/a> to the roundup they declare the LX100 the best with:<\/p>\n\n

\nThe LX100 offers just about everything you could ask it to: a fast,<\/span> bright\nlens with an adequate zoom range, a large<\/span> sensor, and well-thought-out,\nresponsive controls. DSLR and mirrorless slingers searching for an\nall-in-one compact that will satisfy their needs for control and image\nquality will not be disappointed with the LX100<\/blockquote>\n\n

Good enough to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n

The first thing I did when I got it was set it to record images in raw and not JPEG\n(because working with the raw sensor data gives you\nso much more latitude<\/a>\nto work with in post processing, and to\nrecover from exposure disasters<\/a> that might happen).<\/p>\n\n

Other than that I've not done much more than skim the 332-page manual,\nso I'm sure I'm not using the camera to its potential, but I'm quite\npleased with it so far.<\/p>\n\n

The first cycling outing I used it on was this jaunt with Manu<\/a>, and\nthen on the 330km ride\naround Lake Biwa<\/a>, but before those I put<\/span> it head to head with my Nikon\nD4 on a trip<\/span> to the Toji-in Temple (\u7b49\u6301\u9662)<\/span> with Paul Barr and Damien\nDouxchamps, a wonderful<\/span> “<\/span>hidden treasure”<\/span> location that I learned<\/span> about on\na tour<\/span> with NORU<\/a> last\nmonth.<\/p>\n\n

I tried to take comparable shots, and processed them in Lightroom to\ntaste. It's a very<\/span> unscientific test... sometimes I screwed<\/span> up the exposure\non one or the other, and had to recover it in Lightroom, but this is what I\ndo<\/span> anyway, so it's a real<\/span>-world (for me) test.<\/p>\n\n
