Continuing from “<\/span>Miyama Cycling Tour with Joshua and Manseki, Part 1<\/a>”<\/span>, this\npost picks up after we (Joshua Levine, Manseki Kanemitsu, and I) had left\nthe main road to take an old road over a mountain<\/span> instead of a new, flat,<\/span> boring\ntunnel through it.<\/p>\n\n

When we turned a corner and were presented with this vista, I jokingly<\/span> asked Josh to return so I\ncould<\/span> have some “<\/span>human interest”<\/span> in my photo,<\/span> and even\nthough I was<\/span> obviously joking, being the mensch\nhe is, he hesitated only long enough to flash a big<\/span> grin, and bolted down. Just as quickly, and without\nwords, Manseki followed.<\/p>\n\n

I enjoyed a rest while they headed back down, then snapped some photos as they came back up.<\/p>\n\n\n

The road got considerably more strewn with debris once we crossed the pass at the top and headed down...<\/p>\n\n

I don't know what's so attractive about the beauty of Japanese nature\nthat makes a small<\/span> but highly-impactful segment of society want to so\nincessantly dump garbage at every conceivable spot of beauty. Trash\ndisposal depends on the municipality, but is generally really cheap, so\nthis makes no sense aside from “<\/span>some people are just monumentally selfish”<\/span>\nangle.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't get much chance to check out the property (the same one with\nthe kura<\/i> seen above) as I flew<\/span> by, but it was impressive. It was probably<\/span> just an old farmstead, but it certainly caught my eye. I'd like to<\/span>\nrevisit at a slower<\/span> pace some day.<\/p>\n\n

Toward the end I was quite tired, so I'm actually happy we didn't do too\nmany more little highly-vertical side trips, but now, after the fact, I can lament<\/span> a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

A short segment of main city road in the eastern part of Kyoto city proper is\ncurrently under construction to cut the number of lanes in half, and\ndouble the level of inconvenience.\nSomeone in city government deems it worthy to spend the money (and\nthe diverted attention of every driver going by) to note that fact on this\nsign in the far northwest mountains an hour's drive away<\/i>. The changing<\/span> messages on the sign asks people to stay away from the half-mile\nstretch of road that they are unlikely to come anywhere near in the\nfirst place.<\/p>\n\n

To get there, you would literally have to drive for an hour, snaking\nyour way through the mountains into the completely opposite side of the\ncity nowhere near the road in question. <\/p>\n\n

Just stupid. There was another electronic sign like this five minutes later,\nimploring the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n

Just after exiting the tunnel, we passed by the Ochiba Shrine\n(“<\/span>Fallen-leaf Shrine”<\/span>), which has a gorgeous<\/span> carpet of\nyellow<\/a> in the fall. I'd first<\/span> heard of this place years ago when a\nfriend<\/span> had bicycled here<\/a>, and it seemed to me at the time impossibly\nfar away for a bicycle.<\/span>.. even on the scooter it took an hour. Never would\nI have<\/span> believed I'd be riding a bicycle<\/span> out here myself, much less after\nhaving ridden 100+km first.<\/p>\n\n

We eventually got onto a smaller more up-and-downy road that brought us by\nthe \u201cYama no Ie Hasegawa\u201d restaurant<\/a> that I visit<\/span>\na few<\/span> times a year.<\/span> Josh had business to attend to so continued straight home, while Manseki and I paused<\/span>\nfor coffee and cheesecake...<\/p>\n\n\n
