I went out for a long bike in the mountains of northern Kyoto on Saturday,\nand after 120km (75mi) of tough ups and pleasant downs with friends (that\nI'll write about separately: here<\/a> and here<\/a>), I made an<\/span> attempt at a hill<\/span> so steep that its\nname on Strava is “<\/span>Nasty”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

It's so steep that they have a mirror over<\/i> the road, pointing down, so that folks coming from below\ncan see whether the road is clear up over the lip.<\/p>\n\n

The hill rises about 26m over a distance<\/span> of\n125m (85' over 410'), which puts the overall steepness at 21%, which is\nexactly what Kyoto City labels the road at. That's about the same slope\nfrom the ground to the top of a 6-story building over the course of a football<\/span> field.<\/p>\n\n

I was tired after eight hours of hard riding, but had heard about this hill\nthe other day and wanted to try it. Manseki kindly used my camera to snap some shots.<\/p>\n\n\n

It took me 51 seconds.<\/p>\n\n

I had to make a new segment on Strava (here<\/a>) because the\none that was already there<\/a> is way off from reality, putting the ending\npoint well beyond the end of the hill instead of at the end of the hill, so\nafter you're done with the climb, unless you move an\nunnaturally<\/span>-far distance from the end of the hill before stopping to\nrecover your breath, the stop is counted in your climb time. Just stupid\nand sloppy.<\/p>\n\n

Lots of segments in Strava are like this because people who create them\nare sloppy, and Strava doesn't give any way to provide feedback or to even\nsee who made it. So I have<\/span> to end up making new (carefully-measured,\nseemingly-redundant) segments. But Strava<\/span> also doesn't give any way to\ndescribe a segment<\/span> beyond the title, so these carefully-measured segments\naren't presented as such to folks who come across them, so perhaps they get\nlost in the slew of crap.<\/p>\n\n

UPDATE:<\/b>\nThe new segment as seen at Strava is not without its problems. An easy road<\/span> almost parallels the difficult climb, and they're close enough that\nStrava counts the easy passage as an attempt at the difficult climb, so you\nsee ridiculously-unrealistic times for the climb, such as “<\/span>7 seconds”<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

As of Sep 2015, the fastest actual climb is\n this 29-second effort<\/a> that Strava lists as #57.\n It should be #1.<\/span>\n Second place should be\n this 30-second effort<\/a>,\n and third should be\n my own 33-second effort<\/a>\n (quite an improvement over my 51-second first try!).\n<\/p>\n\n

But even within the limited world of Strava data, the above rankings are\nan approximation because true efforts are hidden for folks who happened to\nhave ridden the parallel road some other time. Each person can appear in\nthe rankings only once, so, for example, this\nincorrectly ascribed 16-second ride<\/a> by one of Kyoto's fastest riders\nhides any time he made on the actual climb. It's quite<\/span> likely this guy has\ndone the actual climb in 25 seconds, but to find out we'd have to dig\nthrough his hundreds of Strava activities to look.<\/p>\n\n

Strava could easily fix this by allowing people to remove a specific<\/span>\nsegment from their ride, but they have shown no interest in providing\nuseful features like this.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
