I led my recent post about inaccuracies with consumer\nGPS devices<\/a> with the photo above, but I'm repeating it here to tell a\ndifferent<\/span> story...<\/p>\n\n

In the photo, taken by a passing<\/span> hiker at the\nsummit of Mt. Otowa (\u97f3\u7fbd\u5c71)<\/span> in Kyoto, my fingers are lightly resting on\nthe bike frame. When touching the bike that way as I was<\/span> posing for the\nshot, my fingers felt a kind<\/span> of buzzing vibration\nsensation, which I thought<\/span> was odd. The wind was<\/span> strong, but I\ndidn't<\/span> think the gusting would hit the bike's resonate frequency or\nanything.<\/p>\n\n

Later, when moving the bike around I got<\/span> some pretty nasty shocks, which\nalso seemed odd because I was<\/span> a long<\/span> way from the nearest electric outlet. I eventually<\/span> realized that the smaller the contact between my skin and\nmetal from the bike, the larger the pain. But unlike<\/span> a shock<\/span> from, say,\nstatic electricity, it was ongoing. I quickly<\/span> learned to not touch the metal parts of the bike.<\/p>\n\n

The reason is apparent in once sense if you see the view in another direction. Here's looking\nnorth toward the city of Otsu:<\/p>\n\n\n

This view is remarkably similar to this Google\nEarth view<\/a> from my article about Strava the other day, except that this\nphoto is worse because of the horribly hazy day, and because of the ugly\npower-transmission wires.<\/p>\n\n

They led to a tower right at the peak of the mountain. Retreating down\nthe mountain a bit<\/span> and snapping a photo<\/span> toward the top, you can see my bike\nin the lower right...<\/p>\n\n

The lines simply pass over the mountain and do not in any way seem to be\nrequired to be there, running up and down the most exposed ridges for no\napparent reason other than to destroy the maximum amount of natural beauty\nwhen viewed from either side of the mountain. This is a skill<\/span> that Japan\nseems to excel at.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the mere presence of the lines near the bike was enough to give\nit a shocking<\/span> amount of, well, shock. I suppose<\/span> the flowing electricity\ncreates a magnetic<\/span> field, which in turn turns partially back to electricity\nin the presence of metal like the bike frame? I wonder<\/span> whether my iPhone was\ngetting charged at the same time, as well as my credit cards getting wiped?<\/p>\n\n

I'm not kidding when I say that shocks were painful. I wonder<\/span> what would\nhappen to someone with metal implanted in their body (bone screws,\npacemaker, dental filling, etc.).<\/p>\n\n

Apparently nothing, though. A web search reveals articles about the\nphenomenon (such as this<\/a>\nand this<\/a>),\nand apparently it's just an inconvenience. Still, a painful<\/span> one, so I'll\ntake more care next time.
