It's been three weeks since I posted\n“<\/span>Matt Campagna Wigglegrams Kyoto<\/a>”<\/span>,\nso I'm finally getting around now to posting other photos from that outing, where I met<\/span>\nfellow Lightroom developer<\/a> Matt Campagna while he was visiting Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

Our plan was to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine<\/a>,\nand since I'd been there for photoshoots many times\n(most recently with former Yahoo! co-worker\nAndrei Zmievski<\/a>,\nand The Japan Times<\/i> columnist Alice Gordenker<\/a>), I thought<\/span> I'd try something different this time.<\/p>\n\n

Unless I'm going out on\na bike<\/span> ride<\/a> or other special situation like a heavy<\/span> snowfall<\/a>, I tend to<\/span> bring three lenses, all primes: a 24mm<\/span> wide-angle, a 50mm<\/span> or 85mm medium\nangle, and my favorite lens, the Voigtl\u00e4nder 125mm<\/a>. But for this<\/span> outing with Matt, I thought<\/span> I'd give a super<\/span>-wide-angle lens a\ntry,<\/span> so I brought<\/span> a 14-24mm zoom<\/span> (along with the 85mm f\/1.4 for\nportraits).<\/p>\n\n

Part of the goal in bringing the wide-angle lens was to force me to use\nit, to experiment. One expects<\/span> some distortion with a wide<\/span>-angle lens, but\nwhen taken out of context by an uncentered crop like the shot above, the result can be a “<\/span>off”<\/span>\nin an unsettling way.<\/p>\n\n

This shot clearly has distortion, but it's not unsettling to me, I suppose,<\/span> because\nthe crop is more centered...<\/p>\n\n

Matt's smile is what grabs and holds the attention in this shot, but once you notice how big the camera has become,\nit's hard to unnotice. He's holding<\/span> a Nikon<\/span> D4, the same as I'm using.<\/p>\n\n

We stopped at a cafe for a cool drink, and with a lot<\/span> of leaves just\noutside the big windows next to us (as seen in this shot<\/a> of the\nsame table), there was a green<\/span> cast over Matt's face. The green<\/span> is all\nnatural, coming from all the foliage outside and all, but ever since this experience with\nlow-quality lights<\/a> I've been sensitive to a green<\/span> color cast, and want\nto remove it.<\/p>\n\n

I took a closer portrait shot, and in Lightroom tried to reduce the level of green...<\/p>\n\n

The “<\/span>lost”<\/span> in the caption refers not to directions around the sprawling\nshrine complex, but to the amazing sense of hidden wonder and escape that\nthis specific location had... that sense is lost in the photo, which has little\nto recommend it beyond the journalistic statement that Matt was at that location.<\/p>\n\n

I'll have to put some thought in how to capture that sense.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not a big fan of wide-angle lenses, probably because I don't<\/span> have an innate sense on how to use it well,\nnor enough practical experience to overcome the lack of instinct. Still, in\nthe seven years I've had it, I've posted 140 photos with it at its most wide\nangle (14mm), and have added 11 more today. I seem\nto<\/span> like it best for the “<\/span>environmental”<\/span>\nshots, showing the subject in the wider context of the surrounding\nenvironment.<\/p>\n\n
