I've found a new place to try to get nice sunset photos of Kyoto from. Sort of.<\/p>\n\n

For years my go-to place has been the Shogunzuka, which I first<\/span> posted about almost\neight years ago<\/a>, but have posted about\nmany times since<\/a>. It's a 5<\/span>-minute drive from my place on a high<\/span>\nhill (small mountain?) over eastern Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

The small mountain it's on is the little bump going across the center of\nthe shot above... the mountain I'm on for the shot, Mt. Otowayama, is 593m\n(1,950') high and 6½ km farther away. It took me<\/span> about an hour\nfifteen minutes to ride my bike there<\/a>\nthis evening. I went in<\/span> hopes of a nice<\/span> sunset, but there were only gray\nskies in anticipation for a typhoon<\/span> passing by in a day<\/span> or two.<\/p>\n\n

Maybe next time.<\/p>\n\n

I'd not known about the place until yesterday when a friend<\/span>\n\nposted\na photo<\/span><\/a> from the top on Facebook. So today<\/span> I gave<\/span> it a try.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

One really needs a mountain bike to get there. A closed<\/span> mostly-paved\nroad gets you close, but the last little bit is a mountain<\/span> trail. I had to<\/span>\npush the bike on a few<\/span> sections of extremely steep trail, but otherwise\ncould ride most of the way.<\/p>\n\n

I was gratified to break my record on a few<\/span> of the smaller hills on the\nway there and back. Getting the “<\/span>PR”<\/span> (personal record) on a ride<\/span> is sort of\naddictive, but also a diminishing<\/span> resource.
