When writing <span class='nobr'>a blog<\/span> post about some place I've visited, <span class='nobr'>I usually<\/span> think of photos in terms of documenting the experience, and so <span class='nobr'>I\nguess<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I didn't<\/span> do much. Happliy you framed extra on top and bottom\n(to may taste anyway)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><b>My Reaction:<\/b> This feels more pleasing than mine, with <span class='nobr'>a white<\/span> balance that feels more\nrealistic. (The white balance from mine was set via a <a\nhref='\/blog\/2012-10-10\/2114'>color-checker<\/a> sample,\nwhich makes it perhaps <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>correct<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> but not necessarily pleasing.)<\/p>\n\n<hr style='margin-top:30px; <sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>640 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/2.5, ISO 200 &mdash;\n<a href='\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_045092-9AF.jpg'>map &amp; image data<\/a> &mdash; <a href='\/blog\/proximity\/i\/JF7_045092-9AF.jpg'>nearby photos<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/>processing by\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Austen<\/span>\n<meta itemprop='url' content='http:\/\/regex.info\/i\/JF7_045092-9AF.jpg'\/>\n<meta itemprop='about' content=\"processing by Austen -- Yoshiminedera Temple (\u5584\u5cef\u5bfa) -- Kyoto, Japan -- \"\/><\/div>\n\n<p>Austen didn't provide a comment, but <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> see in Lightroom that he cropped it <span class='nobr'>a bit,<\/span>\nand painted in some very subtle darker exposure here and there. <span class='nobr'>He did a<\/span> lot with the tone curve\n(adjusting how dark darks are, how middle middles are, etc.) and reduced saturation. <span class='nobr'>He even added<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> of grain.<\/p>\n\n<p>The result is a kind of <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>old<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> like the B&amp;W one above, yet <span class='nobr'>a completely<\/span> different kind of old. <span class='nobr'>It's almost<\/span> like a <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>colorized<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span> B&amp;W shot. <span class='nobr'>It feels<\/span> much more calm and peaceful than <span class='QO'>&#8220;<\/span>impactful<span class='QC'>&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n<hr width='50%'\/>\n\n<p>I didn't get as many submissions for this photo as some of the others,\nbut <span class='nobr'>I picked<\/span> this one to start because the various versions are so very\ndifferent &mdash; each person went for <span class='nobr'>a completely<\/span> different vibe &mdash;\nso it really makes me appreciate the exercise.<\/p>\n\n<p>My thoughts on the artificial horizon highlight something\nimportant, though difficult, to keep in mind: comparing and contrasting\ndifferent versions is explicitly <i>not<\/i> what we do with most photos...\nas consumers of others' imagery, we generally only see the final product\nwith eyes untainted by other versions or possibilities.<\/p>\n\n<p>Had Daniel's version with the dark horizon been the only view <span class='nobr'>I had<\/span> of\nthis photo, <span class='nobr'>I perhaps<\/span> wouldn't have even noticed the artificial horizon,\nmuch less thought it was <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> too dark. <span class='nobr'>It's impossible<\/span> to know.<\/p>\n\n<p>I gave some thought to having the images presented randomly for each\nviewer, so that not everyone's view is modified in the same way. <span class='nobr'>Had I done<\/span>\nthis, folks who happened to see the dark-horizon version first may well\nhave thought the next one they saw too garish, like drinking orange juice\nafter brushing your teeth. <span class='nobr'>The order<\/span> things are presented in can really\nmatter.<\/p>\n\n<p>In any case, I really appreciate the four submissions, both individually\nand as <span class='nobr'>a group.<\/span> <span class='nobr'>I hope we<\/span>'ll see similar quality for the other photos in <a\nhref='\/blog\/2015-02-22\/2528'>the challenge<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<p>I'm going to be traveling for the rest of the month, so it'll\nlikely be <span class='nobr'>a while<\/span> before <span class='nobr'>I get<\/span> to the next photo, so if\nyou're considering to participate, you've still time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><i><a href='\/blog\/2015-05-22\/2578'>Continued here...<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I'm sharing the first results from \"Photo-Development Challenge: Inspire Me and Others With Your Artistic Interpretation\".
